I was allways told never to buy a colt revolver or a smith and wesson self loader . My choise woulde be a smith and wesson 686 with 6 inch barrel in 357 magnum . most gun fights are over within 30 secs ,so 6 rounds out of the 686 would be more than enough, if you know how to shoot .

Harnser .

I notice you have mentioned two standard issue sidearm's to the British and American forces. Could I ask how they performed relistically? The colt .45 was a heavy round with knock down power i know but is accuracy severly reduced?

Baldrick, I see that you mentioned that the Browning Hi-Power was inaccurate? It was also issued to specialist army units as well as regular army I believe throught the 70's & 80's was'nt it?

Regards

I would say the .45 as i have a fondness for the round.. I carried the Colt 1911 A1 in the Army and have seen it affects up close and personal.. The .40's are nice, but i shall take the .45 every time.. I know what that round is capable of.. The round but hits like a brick **** house B) Get yourself s springfied with adjustable sights and you shall be pleased  I carry a plain old stripped down non adjustable model military issue from the '60's

The difference being that the standard issue Browning GP used 9mm ammunition designed to cycle a Stirling SMG. Pistols are not designed to be used with such hot loads and tend to rattle to pieces sooner or later. Specialist units wouldn't necessarily use standard military ball ammunition.

And yes, it was inaccurate but that doesn't mean that all Hi Powers are/were. Those that haven't been subjected to military ball over a prolonged period and deadly accurate. As with anything, if it's looked after it will do a job for you.

I appreciate that, Dave. Father kept a fettled, refined and highly accurate Hi-Power for Practical use, before the ban.

quite amusing reading all the wants ans wishes,,,,, first you guys need to get a rule overturned and i dont see that happening now.

having said that, a nice few wishes out there.

my toys consist of a number of .22" s/a berettas and walther, one of the favorites is the Ruger GP100 in .357" mag, running a number of cals from 38" up through to mag, great platform 6" in stainless, pachmyer gripped, on to the .44" mag Ruger redhawk 7" stainless again, certainly gets your heart running, rose wood standard grip, lovely tool and certainly would uin someones day, on to the .45" ACP Para ordinance double stack 10 rnd, matched and tricked out, a lovely pc to shoot, accurate and fun, next is the .50"AE desert eagle, as posted about the .357" and the shock wave,,,,, let the 50 go and watch the reaction of those around you, is it fun,,,, dam right it is, is it practical, not in a lifetime, it just happened to be the biggest thing around at the time.

bereta 92 i saw posted as not impressed,, nor i, about as exciting as watching grass grow, the thing with the nines is they are cheap and you can shoot them all day for a few bucks, may as well use a .22"

handguns are fun, its a shame you guys dont have the option now, i know all my southern friends certainly enjoy the privalige openly.

Martin.

Before the ban I had a matched pair of customised Browning High Power's, a CZ75, a Ruger Super Redhawk and a Ruger No1. A Desert Eagle was on order but, to be honest, the ban saved me from throwing the money away. After shooting one fairly regularly now, I dont think I would have enjoyed owning one much

I fly out to Sofia, Bulgaria at 2pm today to go pistol shooting. At the club I have a Beretta 96, Sig P226 and a Makarov (well, it is Eastern Bloc after all )

Strange how I have to travel from a major force in world leadership, freedom and democracy, to (what was till recently) a 3rd word country to shoot a pistol? I blame it on global warming :good:

In Northern Ireland, Channel Islands and I believe the Isle of Man handguns can still be owned for target shooting.

In England, Scotland and Wales you can still get long barelled revolvers for target shooting, but they're hard to get, and I think look a bit silly.

They only other ways really are antique or historic firearms and pistols for humane dispatch, but again they're had to get a license for unless your a professional i.e. wild boar farmer, professinal stalker, slaughterman etc.
