i have just bought some banger ropes to try and move the birds around a bit more but all i could only get 30min per bang so i have taken every other one out so its every hour.

i bought some natural rope to see if it would work but it just goes out.

any one have any idea what i can use please.

thanks

the rope they use is a special type which is a wick material rather than a rope material hence why it smoulders, if you were closer to me then i could make you a set with whatever delay you want (i own a pyrotechnics company) i will have a think what alternative material you can get your hands on.

Not sure about anywhere else but i get mine from the farmer who i have permission to shoot from, he charges me the rate he pays which is £22 a box of 12 day ropes by portek. if i forget to catch him then i make my own :good:

Usual price is scats at £30 a box of 12.

the ones i have are 12 bangs per rope with 30mins between. i want to put 3 ropes out around a rapeseed field.

theres a gas gun that gets moved around but all the birds do when theres a bang is take off and fly to one of the corners and carry on feeding. so the plan is to put a banger in 3 of the corners and me in the forth. if i find that i need the bangs closer together then i will just swap the ropes for one that i havent snipped the ziptie off.

as theres trees in these areas and the public walk around some of the areas i have wires the ropes so i can ship them up the trees with the aid of a fishing pole and then hook them on the branches and then when i pack up i can find then again with the aid off the white strip of cloth that is on the hooks.

the bangers wick is only put into the rope and then zip tied so its very very easy to play around with. works out to be 1" of rope for 10mins

Can i get some of the rope on its own as i might have 50 bangers and no rope.lol

i bought them from countrywide, a farming type shop for the gen public. just ask for them as there out the back with the gun cartridges. not cheap but im fed up of watching the pigeons in the corners and not coming over to me unless the gas gun blows.£36 for a box of 12 ropes with 12 bangers.

i seam to remember that window sash cord smolders but i dont thing they would like me in B&Q testing it.lol.

Cotton rope soaked in a saturated solution of potassium nitrate (saltpetre) and then air dry not forced heat ie:radiator ,You can get it from a company called "Garden Direct" ,You can order online.

This makes the rope burn a bit faster but instead of smouldering it fizzles like the old blue touch paper on a firework , that is how the old style blue touch paper is made.

the ropes worked well over the weekend just a bit puzzled as the box sied 12xropes 12 bangs per rope and 6 hours burn time.

i took every other banger off the rope as i didnt want a bang every 30 minutes. tured out that the bang still went off every 30 minutes and the rope only lasted 3 hours

still need to find the rope so i can make up a few more.

Here is an extract from an American site .

Rope firecrackers are an inexpensive way to create unattended sound (Fig. 4). The fuses of large firecrackers (known as fuse-rope salutes or agricultural explosive devices) are inserted through 5/16- or 3/8-inch (8- or 9.5-mm) cotton rope. As the rope burns, the fuses are ignited. The time between explosions can be regulated by the spacing of the firecrackers in the rope. The ability to vary the intervals is an asset since birds can become accustomed to explosions at regular intervals. Burning speed of the rope can be increased by soaking it overnight in a saltpeter solution of 3 ounces per quart (85 g/l) of water and allowing it to dry. Since the burning speed of the rope is also affected by humidity and wind speed, it is wise to time the burning of a test section of the rope beforehand. Because of the fire hazard associated with this device, it is a good idea to suspend it over a barrel, or make other fire prevention provisions.

:good: We use them sometimes for the geese/duck but when you set them up place inside a oil drum placed at 45 degrees facing wall/tree this will reflect the sound back toward the drum(louder bang) make sure you are not too near for fire hazard.I know it is expensive but they do make "gas guns" for this..........
