Topgunners
Having been rather mega busy with work and also sorting out a whole heap of land checks with the flo and his boss I finally had a day out on the beans Saturday. Early morning I drove round and reccyed the rape fields, clover and newly drilled bean fields. I set up about 7.30am on a field of beans with well over 500+ pigeons on it. They were moving about all over the field like a blanket; sweeping across in unison at a slow walking pace. I pitched the hide along the hedgerow and within minutes had my first bird and by 10.00am had dropped 37 pigeons and then the just stopped flying in completely. Stone dead, nowt etc. I sat for another hour for no birds and then decide to move on to another of the farmer's fields about 8 miles away. After walking off 200-300 pigeons and 60+ jackdaws; I sat watching the field for over an hour trying to decide which was the best spot to set up the hide; as due to the very strong winds the pigeons were not following a particular flight path back into the field. I decided to set up in the middle of the field under a tree with the wind behind me, and a pattern of pigeon deeks straight out in front of me and a dozen crow deeks out to the far left-hand side of me. After about 20 minutes or so the first birds came dropping in; swinging round far out to my right and then into the wind coming straight at me. Also the rooks and jackys were also popping in from time to time . I shot steady for about 5 hours but had to give PLENTY OF LEAD to my shots as the birds were whizzing in and past at a fair old rate of knots. I finally picked up 71birds out of 78 hit ( the others dropped into other fields or hedgerows) and added to my early morning foray I ended up with 115 shot. 101 pigeons and 14 blackies . The dog worked well and only faulted once on a 150yard dropped pigeon, on the far edge of the field. (Wind assisted NOT shot at 150yards - before you start) He probably lost the scent in the strong winds. Cranfield
Great report as usual and it shows the importance of being prepared to move, something I am surprised some shooters can't be bothered to do. The dog certainly works well. I suppose the short legs are due to picking up all those birds. ,
