mrthumb
I was in 2 minds in posting this, then I realized- you guys are men, you have seen it all before. besides its nothing to what a 17 HMR can do. Also, just like a twisted car wreck on the side of the road you gonna have to do some rubber necking. I have used air rifle holo points in my Logun S-16, but they travel at 650 feet per second and have 12 ft pounds of energy. and I did not see much difference in the wound from normal domed pellets The subsonic .22 rim fire CCI holo points fired from a Ruger 10/22 have about 100+- ft pounds of energy and travel at 1050 feet per second. This extra speed and energy makes the difference it seems. I took this shot at about 60 -70 yards from standing, and I even saw the Saving Private Ryan token blood mist from the shot. I can assure you when I inspected the carcass I briefly pulled a face like a bulldog chewing a thistle. While on the throne later that evening I started to think about the science behind what caused this damage. The projectile entered the eye horizontally side on and the movement of liquid hydraulics pressurized the skull, to the extent where it was great enough to pop the brain, clean out of the top of the head. I'm sure other factors like the pocket of pressurized air in the holopoint and the bullet itself expanding played a part. but there was a clean exit wound on the other side of the face. I believe its the same reason why water melons explode so well when their shot. The liquid does not pressurize and searches for a exit, even if it means going through bone. I hope this was slightly educating..

humperdingle
I've experienced something similar, where a bunny shot in the chest with a .22lr, slumped immediately after shooting, and on inspection, it's heart had been pushed out of the exit wound and was lying on the ground next to the rabbit. Not a huge mess, but the internal pressures clearly built up to a sufficient level.

stevethevanman
Its simple the bullet takes up place other matter wants to, so thats why you sometimes see, eyes like popping out of a rabbits head, after being shot in the back of the head with a 22lr, ive seen it loads, but the brain popping out , thats a first. The eyes of a fox can fall out if hit in the head by something like a 223 balistic tip. Steve
