Doc
Hi FM!I am definitely a magnet fun but I think the question is a very theoretical one as most of us tend to use what they have got available. Many people shoot without a magnet.I have got both a magnet and a flapper and tend to use both(at least at the beginning of a day out) next to my decoys and 2 floaters. thanks, doc
Will Beasley
Recently my birds on drillings have been loving the Magnet....The birds on Rape have been hating the magnet, so instead I've been using the Flappers on Rape with good success. Teal
I went for the magnet, it has at least double the movement of a flapper. That said, I believe a pair of floaters and a flapper will often be superior to a magnet. It's all about changing things around on the day- as Will said. You can have every hightechgadget on the market but if the birds have not been previously visiting the field you are shooting on you will very often fight a losing battle, unless you are very near to the flight line. At the end of the day reconaisance is the most important factor - more important than any of the gadgets available. Of course the gadgets- flappers magnet etc... do help greatly to get the birds into whatever your preferred shooting range is, and their movement can maximise a days shooting by pulling in birds which otherwise (especially when there are a lot of food stuffs around) wouldn't have come in to the pattern. ferretmanabu
I went for traditioinal shells because that's all I have at the moment. I will be getting a couple of bouncers soon though. Once I can afford it, I'll buy myself a rotor and maybe a flapper as well, but for now I have to live with my meagre student budget.
Catamong
I tried one of Deako's flappers last season but didn't have much joy with it - the wing beat is too slow in my opinion, so it is now gathering dust in the garage, alongside my collection of "wonder" golf clubs. (No reasonable offer refused...!!!) I had more success with the old manual flapper promoted by WAGBI back in the 70's, (now BASC for the young 'uns reading this), invented by Sid Semark, as you could give the bird a series of short sharp flaps which simulated a bird landing - they used to be real suckers for that trick. I would go for a rotary everytime, as it will draw 'em in from a great distance.
Guest Mr Pieman
Anyone use one of Pinewood's flappers? They look different to Deako's - of which I have two and I have great success with - and wondered what the difference in operation was - if any? The Pinewood seems rather pricy too - £165-50 PP
Paul in North Lincs.
At this time of year I prodominently use the magnet (sometimes 2 magnets) depending on the traffic. Decoy wise..... I always load the rotary up with frozen woodies, and use anywhere between 10 and 30 high detail shells on springers, and a hand full bodies. Have been given alot more permission this year, so am now able to be more mobile... On these 'roving' days I just carry a lightweight net bag, with a handfull deeks.. and mooch about where ever my ferathered friends take me! Paul in North Lincs. davhope
I used a old manual flapper yesterday which I have converted to a auto useing a old pecker.......It worked a treat the birds were commiting to the decoys straight away, It has certainly convinced me that it is worth carrying it and a battery over 2 fields, It didnt spook them at the last minute like a magnet can either, Dave. Axel
Over the last couple of seasons which has bought you the most success in decoying birds to the gun. Thanks, FM. I dont have a magnet or a flapper but have tried a floater a few times. It did'nt seem to make a lot of difference (on OSR and sprouting peas). This weekend, I did stick a crow decoy some yards away from my pattern of 18 shell pigeon decoys and more pigeons came in than on the last two occasions. Not sure why but I'll do it again and see.
