the_commoner
evening all, just got back in from a walk across the fields, on my way upto the fields i could hear a screaming sound and thought at first that something had got hold of a rabbit, i asssumed a fox i got into the first field and whatever it was was making a hell of a racket, much more i reckon than a rabbit, it was dusk and i could clearly make out 1 fox but i reckon there was another although i cant be sure i have heard when foxes fight they squeel, i take it this was what i heard ? having lived i the coutry all my life i have never heard anything like it before, very loud and very piercing anyone ??? the_commoner
i did think that but in all honesty i am in no way a fox expert ................. surely someone on here knows what it was
Chard
I agree, foxes ********. It's a very painful process for the male, apparently. His todger swells so much during the process that he can't get it out until it goes down again, then the vixen starts wandering off
wisecobandit
To late for foxes mating thats normally december time altho it sounds a similar sound to whats described. Maybe foxes fighting as vixens will have young cubs around and maybe another fox has invaded a vixens territory.I would think a few weeks to early but it maybe a vixen calling her young back from venturing to far from the den. the_commoner
no hares on the field and it stopped as soon as the dog picked up the scent and set off that way, she didn't get 15 yards before i stopped her but a fox ran of to the left it as difficult to see but i reckon i saw one head off in the opposite direction
Bleeh
You won't believe me - but I heard the exact same sort of thing the other night. It was more or less centralised in the middle of the field, and I got closer and closer - seeing nothing - intill I fushed a pair of ducks, or teal, or partridges, or something of that size - but it was a pair of birds! (very dark night). It was them making that sound, it sounded like a mix between a ferret and a fox ******** - it was very strange Edited April 20, 2009 by Bleeh

Baldrick
Far too late for ******** foxes (we've been shooting cubs for 2 weeks now). The screaming noise may be badgers - we have a sett near the farmyard, and they make a hell of a racket.
