I said I was going to have a go at the rabbits over cover crop on sat night, sat there all evening but no bunies came out. I thought I was going to have my first blank but then in the last 5 mins just as it was getting dark this big boy ran accross the field and I got him with my new .410 (Leaves less shot in meat than 12g!)

I couldn't believe the size of him, felt like half the weight of my dog!

Well here he is:

Toby.

It was perfectly legal to shoot - the amount of damage 1 hare willcause to crops compared to 1 rabbit is stagering. :)

If its legal to shoot, I have a suitable gun and its causing damage to the crop, both I and the gamekeeper want it gone. (Theres loads of them on my permision)

Although there are restrictions for selling them, you can shoot them in england at any time.

As far as i'm concerned, its a job well done. :hmm:

:hmm: Toby you should know by now that people on here get hysterical about shooting hares........dont worry about it, you have the permission to be there, the game keeper wants them gone so ignore them, most of them are just jealous.

Ive shot hundreds of the things on farms where they do a lot of damage and they are in abundance.......most people only ever see one or 2 there are herds of them on one of my farms!! I shot a lot with fac airguns.....uhhhh shock horror :)

Great shooting with a .410, hope you enjoy its taste!!! Mine used to get fed to a huge snake!!!

Why should i be jealous of shooting a hare, ive shot them for over 30 years but there is a time and it is not when they are breeding and may have young to feed[unless he sexed it before he shot it]

No wounder they are trying to make them a protected species from 2011.

All this is is good for giving the antis more ammo.

Not much of a game keeper is he if he wants them shot and not looked after untill the shooting season

That would be i keeper i would be sacking as well.

I dont think you can shoot these at night..... :)

Jesussssss..

Hares spread ticks and eat crops, they are vermin to some, game to others. If the farmer/land owner/whoever wants them shot so be it. When I was in scotland the keeper was telling me how he lamps them. I just see them as big rabbits.

Good shot, and make sure you cook it up well! :hmm:

Not very clever to shoot at this time of year. = WHY??

And a good job your not in Ireland close season 31 Jan to Aug 12. = HE IS NOT IN IRELAND.

Illegal to sell in the UK from March to July. = HE WONT BE SELLING IT, HE IS GOING TO EAT IT.

I got talking to a framer about hares, and as said before, they do untold damage. Rather that eating everything, they seem to dig things up for the sake of digging.

And they taste AMAZING :hmm::) GOOD SHOOTING YOUNG MAN! :good:

firstly , good shooting with the 410 ,

i too had various remarks after posting a picture of a night time hare , but all permissions are differant , you may not have a local game shoot who would like you to leave hare , also your farm might have had a bunnie bashing away at its crops so bad that its noticable from afar which means all pests must go !!

every body will have an opinion good and bad ,so if your happy and your land owner is happy the whole thing is a job well done !!

:hmm::):yes:

Under the Hares Act 1848, and Hares (Scotland) Act 1848 it is an offence for 'anyone to use any firearm or gun of any description at night for the purpose of killing game'. This is an additional offence to night poaching where game is being shot during the night which begins one hour after sunset to one hour before sunrise. The Ground Game Act (as amended) and The Agricultural (Scotland) Act 1948, appear to override the prohibition on night shooting of hares by occupiers or persons authorised under the Acts.

as quoted in the basc guide book ,

why?

Most game shoots i know don't shoot ground game due to safety. If there are enough about and they are causing damage then assuming you have the right to then they are fine to shoot. Young should be well developed and able to fend for themselves by now so good on the poster. We've enough to be able to shoot a few and will probably trim the numbers up a bit especially if they keep munching on the game cover as its emerging

Thankyou very much for those who supported me on this one!:hmm:

Just to clear it up - it was shot at 9:30 in the light....the pic was taken in the garden after driving home :)

I know some will disagree but to be honest, when you sit there in a hide and watch a hare digging up crops at the other end of the field, when it comes runs in towards you, if you are alowed, I feel it is your duty as a pest controller to shoot it. I don't feel it's worth letting a crop suffer just because you want to shoot it in the phesant season.

If your not happy shooting them - don't.

If they are causing untold damage and its legal - in my book, shoot them.

Well done Toby, good shooting, The problem with internet forums is that everybody has an opinion and in some cases if yours differs from theirs you must therefore be wrong

People are judging you based on their thoughts/opinions and what they are allowed to shoot on their own permissions - you are on your permission and if you can shoot them good luck to you - anybody who has a different opinion - fine but don't give the lad a hard time give him some support.
