shotgunshortie
Had some very unsuccessful trips out recently with harvesting of the rape etc not yet started. There seems to be a few birds on the set aside and in the skies but once spooked when setting up they seem to be impossible to decoy. I know this is very vague but as im new to this, any advice would be gratefully received as im gona try and head out for the day tommorow. Many thanks PW members for some top tips and advice on here!!

MerseaDavid
We found last week that the pigeons were very spooked by the decoys and as soon as we took them in the pigeons came straight in + we have found that they dont like the bouncers at the moment and we are just shooting them as a flightline rather than using decoys. 2 weeks ago we were shooting over harvested rape and the birds were coming in all day in good numbers but they did not decoy, but at the end of the day when we had put the birds into small piles spread around the filed infront of the hide the pigeons decoyed so well it was really strange that the birds did not mind the dead birds being piled up and upside down. We had another 1/2 hour of shooting like that before we ran out of cartridges and we ended up with 351 pigeons and 2 doves.
Greenhunter
Thats how it is though...if they are intent on feeding in a particular field you can't do anything wrong but if there's lots of options and they are not bothered where they feed then you have to do everything right to get a shot or two. It makes it all very interesting doesn't it!! GH

Cranfield
Its always important to find out where the birds are feeding and thats where you want to be. If they are not feeding heavily on your permissions, then you are not going to get any great shooting. Once the rape harvest starts you will have the birds, almost guaranteed. Its interesting to see the comments about the floaters not being liked at the moment. I have had this same experience on rape stubble in the last couple of weeks. As my floaters are the reliable decoy, I was loathe to think it could be them and took just about everything else in first (I even moved a couple of times), but it was only when I took the floaters in and just left out the shell decoys, that the birds came in. Really strange and I cannot work out what the reason could be.

Wriggler
I had a reasonable couple of hours the other week shooting over flocked decoys in the flattened rape but have struggled recently since starting using the floater/bouncer. They don't want to settle at all at the moment, once I have a walk down and scare them all off they go and sit on the power lines. Not lots but maybe a dozen. I thought it was just me

Why not offer up a days shooting and in return your getting free ''lessons'' if you like They could bring their kit and show you how it works, show you different decoy patterns to use etc etc etc A picture paints a thousand words
