Baldrick
I have shot in small clay comps against people with brownings, berretas and even a purdy, my escort perforrmed exactly the same as all those other guns, ok it may not look as nice as the purdy or handle the same but it does the same job at a fraction of the price Applying the 'function over form' logic, Jo Brand is female and probably functional, but you wouldn't take pride in porking her. ShropshireJohn
And you say I'm nuts? That statement is a bit like saying I wouldn't drive an Aston Martin. My Beretta was cheap compared to my other shotgun or my fullbore target rifle. They were both abouot 4 times that price. The gun is a tool for the sport that I love,Wildfowling. I knew right from the start that it was going to get abused, which is why I bought a decent gun. There is absolutely no point buying a cheap gun for a hostile enviroment and then having it fail when you are one the flight of your life. What is the worst that will happen to a gun when you are out shooting? It may get scratched, big deal. Baikals are great, if is was a toss up between a baikal and 10 escorts the baikal would win. I used to work for the company that imported baikals into the country and have shot all of them. I was clay shooting with a guy last night who has had one for nearly 20 years and although it now looks old it performs faultless aver and over again. I don't hate datsans, I just would not buy one. But the Aston Martin would have insurance I now understand why you have a Beretta, as your using it in an environment where its relied up for a long shooting session. I understand that the Hatsan is likely to let you down in this department, However, I walk round the farm with mine! Point it at things and hope it goes bang, if it doesn't then its not a big deal. I could buy 10 Berettas if I wanted, but spending the money on the Beretta which does the same job as the Hatsan (for me) would be wasted money IMO. Every 1st Line of guns is bound to have its problems though, I'm still not 100% sure whether the Jam/cycling issues with the Escort have been sorted in the newer guns. Oh and I forgot to mention that I'd be rather embaressed to take my Escort to a clay shoot.. Edited August 5, 2009 by ShropshireJohn

ShropshireJohn
Why. As the majority of shooters around me have more expensive tastes in guns (unless you get out into the countryside where I am ) and I've been told several times that Semis are disliked due to the old "You can't break the barrel open to shows its empty" line
Imperfection
My honest opinion on my black synthetic Escort. Its a budget gun and end of the day i didnt pay a lot (£300 new) so my expectations are kinda equal.Saying that, its worked flawlessly and only times its refused to cycle is when i havent kept the gas ports clean. Its never going to win any beauty contests and does look a bit militaryish which im not that keen on,but flip side is the plastic stock is robust enough for me not to worry where i use it and i just wipe it down with soapy water when it gets dirty.I wish i'd opted for the wooden stocked finish instead though so i dont look like a wannabe SWAT member. Its relativley easy to strip, but a full clean takes me around 45 minutes (coffee drinking time included) which can become a chore. The amount of recoil i feel is quite low,but the biggest load i've personally put through it is 36gm BB's so may be tame to what others might use? I do have a reoccuring shoulder injury so the reduced recoil is good for this when it occasionally flares up and allows me to go shooting without risk of spending the next week in agony. I've used it at the local clay ground and no one looked down their noses at me or commented, but i do feel like someone who's just pulled up at a concours motor show in a 25 year old Skoda Rapide (remember them!) when everyone else has Brownings,Berettas etc. I shoot well with it,but to be honest-i shoot better with my O/U. ShropshireJohn
I would only start to consider a Beretta Mr Starlight if there is a guaranteed chance of attending one of your coffee mornings. Coffee list will also need supplying I could easily afford 10 Berettas.. but the Hatsan does all I want it to for the money. Its a rough ****** that I dart around the field with EDIT - I also forgot to mention that I'm a lefty.. the Hatsan was an easy gun to get hold of at a cheap price in lefty format, don't the 'expensive , I don't want to damage it in the field' guns come with an increased price?? When you can get a Brand New Datsun with all those extras and all that warranty and 750 cartridges too, for the same price? You Yuppies are barking, more money than sense if you ask me. I can't help noticing on this thread how many authoritative Datsun advisers there are, who don't even own one or who have never shot one. Or Mossbergs either eh Babby? Think I would rather be shooting than drinking tea or Kopi Loowater and the only thing that will lift my esteem is the day I shoot 110 birds for 100 cartridges with my Datsun, instead of the other way around. Definitely a Snob thing going on here, I can see it now. Yup, give me my trusty Datsun any day. keep yer Berretas in the gun cabinet where they belong. Just bring them out once a month to polish them and to swank around the clay shoot with.

Why do they belong in a cabinet? Mine is very seldom in a cabinet, it is always out with me, on the marsh, out while I am feeding. I have never owned a datsun, I nearly did when I was looking for an auto for wildfowling but I had the oppurtunity to shoot one first and the stock was far too short for me. I than bought a Baikal MP153 Semi which kept jamming so I returned it and bought a beretta. I have never had a problem with it. I also own a dirty steven model 79 pump that I paid little money for and have had to repair. I use that quite a bit as well. Believe me this thread has nothing to do with snobbery. It certainly has nothing to do with more money than sense either.

In the end I wore the both of them to destruction. I bought one when they first came out as a gun for the boat when wildfowling. I had two of them because of the amount of time the other one was in for repair (Dealer sold me a second one at cost for my patience!), ..........Six firing pins, two ejector slides, magazine spring, three magazine retaining clips, two new trigger mechanisms and a complete new action (as the other one cracked) spread over the two of them..... My local gunsmith begged me to buy another gun as they were such a pain to him. I also happen to have a Benelli,Beretta and a Winchester auto which have never been back to the shop since they were purchased. There is something for everyone in this business and you own what you want or like-but if you want reliability, and if do any volume of shooting as I do you won't get it from a an Escort-period. Now then any one a convert yet- And fancy joining the exclusive club? I am still taking membership. Set yourselves a goal you guys-should'nt keep putting yourselves down by trying to make a silk purse out of a pigs ear............ Very miss leading al4x. Now do another search in Gun Sales and you will find more Berretas than Datsuns for sale. Buy cheap buy twice through peer pressure, it's not about the gun.
