Semi auto barrel length

Can anyone help please. I have a 28" O/U and love it. I,m now thinking of a semi auto for rough/marsh shooting. I,ve looked at guns in shops and guns with 28 or 30" barrels seem very long. I've read somewhere that you can add 2-5" on to semi auto barrel length to get the equivalent working length of other shotguns. (Does that make sense)

I've seen a Benelli 24", but am worried it will be too short and fast.

Yeah that would be about right. For example my 28" barrelled Benelli M2 is just exactly the same length overall as a mates 32" barrelled Browning over/under.

Different guns have different reciever lengths of course though. My Remington 870 pump action has a 26" barrel, but is actually a bit shorter overall than a mates Benelli superNova fitted with a 24" barrel.

I do think shorter barrels look better on semis and pumps, but having said that I always get the best results on clays with my 28" M2 :D

Add 2" in most cases to give the equivalent.

Its because a Semi has a sliding breach, and this moves forward a couple of inches, meaning the action is longer and the barrel shorter. Overall, a 28" barreled semi will measure up the same as a 30" U/O. There are of course exceptions to this rule of thumb, but it applies in most comparisons.

:D having spent many years with U/O and S/S I was unsure of my semi for a few weeks, but now love it! Mine is a 28 inch

Sorry folks for delay in reply. It's all been (being) digested, Istill don't know what to do about the 24" benelli though, I would have to buy without seeing, common sense says don't do it. However it could be good for rough shooting.

I've read somewhere that you can add up to 5.5" on to s/a barrel length, so thanks Thodgrain for confirming this.

Thanks again all. My head says go for a 26", re-inforced by help from posts. The 24" was a bargain and would most likely have been the wrong choice. I've seen a 26" montefeltro in a shop and that seemed fine. 28" guns seemed too long for me. I know a chap who has a 26", I'll see if I can have a few shots with that before buying.
