Morning all, how close do you all set your magnet up to the hide ? also, why do magnets only come with a short lead/cable ? i have just made my 15 mtrs long.

cheers

Daz

Because you only need to place the battery just outside the radius of the moving decoys and the extra cable length will shorten the duration of the battery.

Your method is the converse of a friend of mine whose lead connection to the battery was only 400mm long. He had to crawl under the arms to get the rotary going and then crawl more carefully backwards once the rotary was in motion.

As said by tightchoke , the battery lead only needs to be long enough to avoid the arms , more cable leads to more power being drained from the battery.

As for how far to put the magnet from the hide then it varies depending on circumstances , usually 15 -20 yards but further if the pigeon are coming from behind me .

I have on occasions when days are slow put the magnet even further out and shoot full choke to give myself some testing shooting.

On days when they have not wanted the whirly ive placed mine as far out as 60/70 yards away from my mane pattern as ive found even if they dont want to be near it it still catches the eye, other times ive had the whirly rite infront on my hide also under 10 yards. It differs on the day.
