  1. anyone else hear anything on the radio lately about a grey squirrel cull? a friend was telling me last night he heard it on the radio a few days back, didnt hear the whole story but what he picked up was that some of the government bodies and i think he said the uspca and some of the other groups like that, are in discussions about a cull
  2. Plus, I cant recall thousands of farmers having a keen interest when the last General Licence was being drawn up by Defra, thousands of shooters and the BASC yes indeed, but good old Farmer Giles couldnt care less, if the Licence hadnt been construed in such a way to include the continuance of Pigeon Shooting then he would have just bought in more gas guns and whirly scarers. I seem to recall it was the CEO of the BASC who lobbied for the Terms of the GL to be clarified and not anyone from the NFU ! Perhaps someone will correct me if I am wrong. Cheers. FM. i think im missing the point here. are you trying to say that pigeons shoudl only be shot for sport, and not pest control? as for gas guns, some of the biggest bags ive had this year has been when a gas gun was in use, after a few days the pigeons and crows get used to it, so thats not a great argument. as for the NFU, etc, not lobbying for clarification of the gl, well surely thats what BASC, etc, are for anyway? but youre right in a way, most farmers i know/meet couldnt care less whats on the general licence, but if they have a problem they want it sorted. ive had to explain to two farmers in the past what i can and cannot legally shoot.
  3. theres a difference between enjoying shooting and shooting for enjoyment. maybe im in a very small minority, but i got into shooting because i love guns. i started shooting when i was 8, but didnt shoot my first rabbit til i was about 19. the first two years i had my 10/22 i put about 7000 rounds through it, but only shot about 8 rabbits - im happy enough setting a target out in a field and blazing away; in fact its only this year when my uncle asked me to sort out a major rabbit problem that i stopped treating my 10/22 as a toy, per se, and started using it like a proper hunting rifle. yes, i enjoy shooting, but unless a farmer has asked me to sort out a problem for him i usually stick to targets, unless im taking a walk out with a friend to bag something for the pot, which happens very rarely. as i said, im probably in a minority, but thats my view.
  4. have to completely disagree there. if youre shooting for sport, good for you, leave the pigeons alone. but plenty of people shoot for pest control first and foremost, so dont judge everyone by your standards.
  5. even simpler choice - if the farmer wants it shot, shoot it, if not, leave it
  6. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/895643.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/4370893.stm im still voting for buckshot
  7. i dont know about anyone else, but im not one to lie down and let people walk over me. had a similar problem a few years back with scum shooting around our house on our land, not much fun having a search beam shone through the bedroom window at 1am and hearing a few gunshots. after they threatened to shoot me one night i rang the police, got the usual "cant do anything unless we know who they are routine" and had to sort it myself. after a few incidents they soon wised up, they were still about the area but never went near our land, and anytime they drove up the road past our house all the lighton the vehicles were turned off
  8. cheers mate, thats exactly what i needed, many thanks
  9. havnt seen too many bears round south armagh lately, just the odd big cat....
  10. na not really mate, you cant see the carnage that the buckshot creates in such low light conditions anyway just because i shoot doesnt mean i should have an encyclopedic knowledge of all the various animals and birds in the countryside. though i suppose reading the general licence helps me narrow down what im allowed to shoot and what im not....
  11. why should we be able to? i split birds into two categories, ones i shoot and ones i dont shoot, unless im allowed to shoot it i couldnt give a damn if its a greater crested *** or a stuffed parrot
  12. cheers, just thought it might be better for a heavier scope and a thinner grip, never used them before myself
  13. two quick questions, hoping someone can help if possible i want to make sure i have the right width of scope mounts to fit on my 917 when/if the licence ever arrives, dont want to get the gun and have to wait a couple of weeks to get scope mounts to fit it looking at the website it says the gun comes with bolt on weaver mounts, but the receiver is also grooved to accept scope mounts; its quite a heavy scope ill be fitting so i reckon mounting it direct to the receiver would be the best bet. all i can find so far is that the receiver is grooved to accept "dovetail" and "tip off type 22 scope bases", but i cant find what width they are - 11mm, 20mm? does anyone know? secondly, would a one piece scope mount affect ejection of spent cases? heres a pic of the gun - http://www.marlinfirearms.com/Firearms/17HMRMagnum/917v.asp - you can see the ejection port is right between the two scope mounts on that scope. a one piece base might be more stable but dont want it getting in the way thanks
  14. i thought they already had... i sometimes get dreams like that, where the gun doesnt work, but its usually more of a life or death situation (or zombies)
  15. good for her. personally i would have rang the police after acting in self defence
  16. hmm sometimes i worry that koz may have been right
  17. what about a shotgun with solid slugs? or buckshot at close range? plenty of european hunters use shotguns for wild boar

  19. have to agree with glensman here, my 10/22 is second to none, 80 yard headshots arent a problem, longest kill shot was 136 yards, longest target shooting 185 yards, and once i found ammo the gun liked the only time i have a jam is by trying to empty a 30 round mag in less than 3 seconds so either rugers arent as **** as theyre made out to be, or im an amazing shot BUT for a first gun i would advise going for a bolt action, to get to know the ropes, then decide after that however, i wouldnt advise anyone to go for an anschutz semi unless you have 6 arms and like to spend 3 hours trying to put the damn thing back together again after a full strip down
  20. i resent the accusation that i would know such a thing! but now you mention it, try this.... and i think absolut blu (spelt right) is quite high too
  21. true fm, thats why any responsible hunter should always carry a buckshot shell or two with him
