im in the same boat, long distance getting a bit blurry, went to specsavers and they gave me a 2 for one deal, first set of normal everyday glasses (which i never remember to wear) and a second set of shooting glasses, sport/sunglasses style, with camo frames and an orangey tint - clays seem to glow when i wear them, and they cut out alot of back ground light, so its far easier to spot movement  only downside is if it rains a bit youre blinded by drops on the glasses

you should buy one of them yourself mate though you are having a rough time of it, its bad enough dealing what happened never mind all the legal cr4p on top of it, but good luck, im sure if you need any help with any of it someone on here will be able to help. i think we'd all be happy if we knew our mates would do the same for us

yep, "the ruger" (ruger 10/22) aka "the 22", "the 500" (mossberg 500 12ga), "the 600" (mossberg 600 12ga) and if i ever get the licence all also have "the marlin" (marlin 917v 17hmr) which will probably also be known as "the 17". original names, i know, but i aint a usmc private though i should add, some of my friends have nicknamed the 500 "the terminator", was quite pleased with that, til i realised it was nothing to do with the amount of kills it got, but was a reference to the amount of bare metal showing through

very sorry to hear that mate, dont think id have the guts to do it, but as daft as it sounds its a fitting tribute that you have his guns now, every time you use them he'll be looking over your shoulder (and laughing at your shooting, if he was anything like my good mates)

the first ammo i found that the gun liked was remington yellow jackets, 33 grain bullet running at a muzzle velocity of 1500 fps. never had a problem with them, but found they started losing accuracy over 80 yards, so changed to remington target, 40 grain bullet running at 1150 fps, not a subsonic, and doesnt have as good a trajectory as the yellow jackets, but the groups stay tighter over longer range

its mostly rough shooting i do mate, rifle and shotgun

my longest kill with a 22lr was 136 yards, and most of my shots are taken between 70 and 100 yards - as for limiting it to 40 yards, well in that case you dont even need a scope on the gun!! this year we used 12ga's, 22lr and a .223 to great effect on rabbits, didnt matter too much about the meat as theres very little market for rabbits here - i asked a local game dealer if he sold them and i got a 5 minute tirade about mixy and how he wouldnt touch rabbit

be careful what type of fish you get, when i lived with the ex we started with one tank 1.5ft by 2.5ft, and ended up with 4 tanks (including two 5 ft ones) and a well stocked garden pond - we made the mistake of buying guppys, tetras and i think marlins (not the big sword fish type ), anyway they just kept breeding and breeding, ended up with hundreds of fish

i agree that we need to be careful about out image, but i think youre making too many generalisations. firstly, sparrows and starlings are still on the NI general licence, and i shoot them in certain areas where they cause a problem, without hesitation. admittedly not many of my permissions have crops growing at the moment, but theres a bigger problem i have found, and thats crows, magpies, pigeons, and yes, starlings and sparrows, entering cattle sheds and helping themselves to a free meal, and thats before considering them roosting in the sheds and leaving droppings everywhere (including over the cattle). its bad enough during the summer, but in winter its 10 times worse - one farmer i know was losing over £100 a month in cattle feed last winter. as for tidying up our image, yes and no. i agree we need to shoot within the law (anyone who doesnt is a muppet), but you need to remember pigeons, etc, are on the pest list, and so can be shot as such. you contradtict yourself though, by saying "We are indeed under the close scrutiny of the anti shooting brigade, and surrounded by a nation of bird lovers, these people know that pigeon numbers are at an all time high and possibly amongst the commonest resident birds, It would only take a well placed word or two of concern about the wild bird population being in decline by one of the conservation organisations to Defra and the whole situation regarding the inclusion of the species on the general list will be brought into serious question. We seem to have very short memories, what happened last time, some members of the committee lobbied for the bird to be removed from the list totally; It was only access to Information produced by census records such as the BTO that safeguarded its inclusion." now, one minute you are saying that pigeon numbers are at an all time high and possibly amongst the commonest birds, but yet you say it would only take a well placed word or two to bring everything into question. so what? if the birds are so common there must be facts and figures and statictics to show this, so couple that with the amount of damage pigeons do to crops, and the talk that they breed all year round, are at an all time high etc, then i dont think we have too much to worry about really. personally, i feel the biggest threat to us is all this talk of sport. yes, i enjoy shooting, but i dont class myself as a sportsman, and i think some people need to get their heads round this. pigeons are not on the general licence for sport, they are on for crop protection and for health reasons. no anti, no matter how deluded or well connected they are, can argue that pigeons do not cause crop damage and that theyre droppings do not cause health problems (and having some relatives who were pigeon fanciers i know the health hazards), therefore as long as pigeon numbers are high then we should be ok. HOWEVER, when it comes down to talk of sport, its very simple in the eyes of an anti - shooting for sport = killing for fun!! how can we fight to keep shooting when we are handing over easy victories like this to the anti's? and how can we justify shooting to the government if we let up on the birds when tings get a bit tough for them?? you know, its one thing have morals and feel compassion for our quarry, but quite another to shoot yourself in the foot over it

the more barrels the better

my views on shooting have already been stated, but i would question the use of the term "smoke screen", firstly, because some people actually DO shoot for pest control, and not use it as a cover for a few jolly's, and secondly, bear in mind this a public forum, if you want to shoot for sport then thats ok, but remember it sort of fly's in the face of the general licence - dont give the anti's any more ammo to use against us
