  1. Every time- Napier or Legia spray over everything dirty, then make a cuppa while it soaks in. Then forbytoo patches through the barrel till clean, out with the chokes and a wipe of the threads. Grease/oil choke threads and hinges/ any contact points, then reassemble, wiping everything with a Legia etc cloth. Use the cloth to carry to cabinet to keep acid fingerprints off. Easy- less than 5 mins in total, gives your cuppa time to cool
  2. Good luck, stick with it, you'll be ok in a couple of weeks. I kept putting it off - ended up smoking for 40 years, then ended up on an operating table 5x as well as chemo, with smoking related cancer, rest of my life with regular checkups. Wish I'd never started now, but feel loads better now I have quit, and the cash saved pays for loads of ammo! Stick at it, all the best.....
  3. Welcome to the asylum, NC is a lovely place, I have friends at Greenboro, great place. Enjoy the banter on here and don't take any ribbing to heart.
  4. I was talking to a guy at the range the other day who was shooting one. He loved his, he said one thing he had been warned about when shopping for BP guns was wear in the knock in wedge that locks the barrel, cylinder and frame together on the Colts, which isnt a problem with the Ruger, different system completely. The stainless Ruger seems to have a really good reputation, but is a big old bit of kit, not for those with small hands or weak wrists! His gun was excellent though, very heavy, but really well balanced, with a VERY satisfying bang and cloud of smoke, big grin factor! Good luck and post some pics if you get it.
  5. Cheers for that, I have already changed over to the 'Mac side', iPhone, iPad3, and do most of my Mac office work on a full-screen desktop iMac- love them! Trouble is, as I say, I use them all the time, but have kept the old PC in a dark corner for some of the stuff I am too mean to buy again. I have about £2K of software on the PC, which I would need to rebuy a big chunk of to run on the Mac, must admit to being a bit hesitant to install the windows platform on the Mac just for that, or I will just end up using it as a windows machine. I think the message is that I must try harder and work out the get-arounds. Mainly it is Photoshop (full version) full MSoffice suite, and a few other esoteric bits and bobs I have been given/ cadged from others. As my old teacher would say, "must try harder"!
  6. Having said that, does anyone know of any decent and not too expensive DVD/CD burning software/ hardware for the Mac. I occasionally need to write CD-ROM and DVD - based teaching packs, as I have always used it, I mainly use good old Nero, and this is about all I keep my old windows PC for, even then the slowness drives me spare !
  7. I got one of the Napier secure gun slips. It has a gurt thick steel staple thingy that goes through the trigger unit, through the case, and lets you use a decent motorcycle cable lock to secure it to a handy nearby fitting. It can be used as a straight gunslip, or as a takedown slip - works in the car as well - just fix the cable to a bulkhead strut in the boot area.Having said that, I still take the forend/bolt with me as well.
  8. Easy, a 4" chisel and a lump hammer! Take them back to the second knuckle, problem sorted permanently! Or you could go for he Rannulph Ffeines method (ouch)
  9. Maybe wash them down with a weak bleach solution, wait a few minutes then rinse well? should be ok for hard surface items - would fade any cloth etc though. You can get specific anti mould cleaners from supermarkets. As you already know, main way of stopping it is to be absolutely sure your gear is completely dry when packing away and in a well ventilated storage area, it's been really difficult with this last year being so damp.
  10. Venice, Malta, a nice quiet Greek island, all romance and wine- THEN the second week in Vegas, with an all- inclusive package at the Gun Store!!!!
  11. I got one of the GDK 6 scoped gun vault lock cabinets for £149 off the 'bay last year - the FEO was well impressed and said it looked and felt as good as my other cabinet (Brattonsound) - it would qualify ++. That's enough for me!
  12. Been there a couple of times, good stock levels, very friendly to me (mind you I was spending quite a bit of cash!). Not the cheapest, but always willing to help and advise, which is worth money, in my eyes.
  13. This thread typifies the debate that goes on whenever firearms and tragedies occur. When even among ourselves, who hopefully are knowledgable on the subject, cannot agree on what is 'militaristic', 'aggressive', 'sniper-like', or that dreadful word, 'acceptable', what hope can we ever have of the 'great unwashed' of the Sun and Daily Wail readers understanding? I am not a fan per se of the militaristic style of rifle, but I can see the attraction for some people, likewise I prefer synthetic stock for practical reasons, but can see the aesthetic beauty of a well made and oiled wooden stock. Variety is the spice of life, they say. One thing the Americans DO seem to have, unlike us, is an organised agency to argue the shooters case - the NRA. This is both a blessing and a curse, they can put the viewpoint of all shooters, but by default, that means ALL shooters, which unfortunately includes the frothing at the brain survivalists, and the 'prize it from mah cold, dead hands!" good ol' Southern redneck types! The UK NRA seems predominantly interested in its own, almost purely target shooting, single fire agenda, and the press will give any amount of negative spin they can, because 'Shock, Horror!' headlines sell papers, which is their ONLY motivation. This, combined with the logical (to some) unified approach of the anti movement, makes it ever more difficult to argue the pro-shooting case. Judgements should be made unemotionally on what is right, not what the publics cries out for in the press, scapegoating whole groups, rather than accepting that whatever we do, some people will snap and kill, with whatever comes to hand. Banning anything will never work, it will only criminalise it and drive it underground, surely the US learned that during prohibition! Like it or not, we all have to work at putting a more positive face on shooting, most of us do - but there are always those whose attitude will be 'If they don't like it, **** 'em!' - ok, I think like that some days, but over the years of shooting, I have changed more anti's minds by calmly explaining the real facts about guns, and helping them realise that the great majority of shooters are ordinary decent people, - 'just like them'.
  14. No, you certainly can't, but some FEOs up this part of the world have been willing to process a person's (once that person has officially started their probationary period) application for their FAC before they completed their probation, the FEO can then do all the checks etc, in one case, after they had chatted to the club secretary, the FEO even did the home visit, but held the final part of the process (i.e. the confirmation that the person was a FULL member of a club and has completed probation) until so notified by the club. In the case of the last member, because all the work was done beforehand, as soon as the club confirmed (in writing, of course) that the probation was successfully completed, they were able to issue the licence immediately. A process that, because of the usual delays, can take up to nine months including the probation period, was shortened to just under 10 days after the probation was completed, very sensible way of going on for my liking! Having said that, I think these few cases were for applicants who already held a current SGC, because the FEO knows many of the checks have already been done, the applicant has already proved to a legally accepted level that they are trustworthy etc, and just need a re-run through the system, with specific regards to firearms.

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. " Attributed to Mark Twain

  20. A couple of the original Beatles lps in good nick were in the papers a few months back, they sold for SERIOUS money!
  21. Looks great fun. I have a slot for a .44 black powder, so I can see me doing some serious shopping at the gun show! Good video, cheers!
  22. Sorry, no offence, but that is not strictly correct - as an NSRA Range Conducting Officer, I have to be able to check and supervise both single shot and semi-automatic rifles. Under NSRA competition rules Section 8, 8.3.2 - If you are shooting Smallbore other than Lightweight Sport Rifle, you can only shoot one round at a time, but : If the rifle has a magazine, only one cartridge can be loaded. 8.3.3.3. - If you are shooting Lightwight Sport Rifle: When used with a magazine, the rifle shall not be loaded with more than 10 cartridges or projectiles, even though the magazine may be of a larger capacity. Hope this clears it up.
  23. There are a lot of variables in your questions, I can only answer from my experience with Lincolnshire FEOs, you will get wider answers soon, I am sure. As far as moderators go, FEOs in this area will not grant you a slot for a moderator for target shooting, unless either you will also use the gun on permissions (which you don't have) or you can provide another good reason, you might get one if you are shooting an inside range, depends on the FEO, it will also depend on what class and calibre of firearms your club is licenced for. As far as the .22s go, it is reasonable to ask for a bolt action for prone/bench rest, and it is common to have a semi-auto for Gallery rifle class etc. You would do well to spend some time looking at your club members guns before applying for lever rifles, a common calibre is .38/.357 magnum, or .44, by various makers. Unless your club is also licenced for practical shotgun, or again, or unless you hold relevant land permission, it is unlikely you will get a slot for FAC shotgun. Ammunition limits depend on how seriously you intend to compete and again you have to justify this to the FEO, a common .22LR target shooting allowance would be at least 1200 to hold and 1000 to buy, if you are shooting regularly, I also have a limit of 600 to buy and 900 to hold on .357/.38, but again, it depends on how regularly you are shooting. FAC is not like SGC, you have to provide good reason for every single Firearm, as well as your ammo limit, if you are shooting target this would include the competition class you are entering etc. The fact that you are hoping to eventually get permissions will not be enough, I am afraid, you must HAVE those permissions before they will consider granting. Get your application into the club, they will have a MINIMUM probation period of 3 months, as recommended by the Home Office, possibly longer, and they will more than likely have a range of guns, members are usually friendly and will let you have a try with theirs, just be respectful and remember, some of the rounds you are firing cost them over £1 each time you pull the trigger! They will also give you good advice on what/ how to complete your FAC application. Good luck, and enjoy your shooting!
