  1. Soft wool felt the stuff they use for industrial gaskets would be the way to go and maybe a 1 1/8 thin card cup not the thick 1 1/4" ones deakin sells, . Over the years I have seen more of these that have bulged that have not, choke reduction would be an idea buffering and shot wrapping would stil give you fair patterns.
  2. Nice, I used to own and shoot a W Moore double four m/l it was a bit heavier 16lb like you say you can get very good results from the m/loaders. Probably have some photos of it somewhere if you want to have a look.
  3. Thanks it was a nice gun it weighed 23lb and was bored ex full both barrels, I shot quite a lot of birds with it while I owned it
  4. Thanks fella for posting the close ups, iv seen a few big ft baker guns in the past built for shoulder or boat use. I have owned a few double fours in the past this was the last one I sold three seasons ago
  5. Aister is it my eyes but the action on that double four looks way wider than the right barrel ?
  6. Aye he showed me and its longer than I thought over 30 years ago when I was a young un, If I recall n those days john used to go to whitton on a motorbike !
  7. Most people with a bit of practice or instruction can call geese especially pinks quite successfully just using their lungs and mouth in most cases and scenarios far better than using a call, I was taught by guy on the Humber now long dead but was well known for his skill and for many years this has served me well, For back up or if I have a cold or sore throat I have used a number of calls but found a original olt 800 slightly tuned to works as good as anything for pinks and greys, after the success im having with the very raspy Nixon Mallard call im certainly going to try one of his goose jobbies iv heard them on the marsh a few times now and I reccon they have the edge on the old 800's .
  8. Iv had all manner of duck call in the past 30 years and finally settled on a sonderman and more recently a foulmouth 2, that was until I tried a E Nixon job a real raspy tone and very easy to blow and to add a stunning looking call too.
  9. Snowmonster on here is selling a top lever steel barrelled single 8
  10. There is a Gainsborough and district wildfowling club, part of the south humber area joint council that shoot the south bank of the humber.
  11. Nice one fella iv done a couple of ponds on my spot over the last few years really reaping the benefits now. Its been the best season iv ever had on the latest pond, been feeding a mix of weed seed out of a corn drier allsorts in it rape seed /fat hen/ broken barley and wheat etc best of all its free !
  12. I agree with that I have a Berretta a400 extreme which I bought recently that handles 3.5 " very well for recoil but I cant see me keeping it my old 1970s Winchester waterfowl shoots fast 36g steel 1's brilliantly (patterns as good if not better) than the a400 with the 1's and it goes through the factory full chokes with no adverse affects so they never comes out of the gun. I can switch to 1 7/8th itm 4.0mm instantly for anything rangey but to be honest the 4.0mm steel does the business and is used for both ducks and geese I have used this combination for a few years now with good results the gun is a 32" waterfowl and weighs well over 8lbs
  13. I agree a hornet can be a formidable calibre in the right hands for rabbits
  14. Not all greeners were brutes although they did make some huge ones, iv owned three different sizes ranging from 4" large action framed guns of 16lb , medium 13lb guns and the light greener 8 bore duck guns that were around 11lb
  15. I found that when I shoot large lowland stags especially in the rut with swollen necks exits are never guaranteed unless you are shooting copper or premium projectiles, When I used a .308 I experienced this problem, this is a 150gn hunting bt at about 70yds it dropped out of the vertibrea when I removed the head If my intended quarry is large stags I now use the .300 ultra mag with out doubt the hammer of thor to big reds
  16. Yes that's him iv only met him once when I sold him a deer carcass, if you know him no doubt he will tell you how he went about it .
  17. I Know its not easy to get your foot in the door pal, if I were you I would be looking at one of the more mainline stalking forums, theres a lad from Doncaster who like you was just starting out he ended up getting his dsc1 paid for with a site bursary and has been out with several members stalking foc
  18. Be prepared to take a pocket full of money or maybe a sack full of notes if your just going un announced or as a stranger door knocking farms in the rare event there might be a scrap of land that many of your predecessors might have missed. Most farmers I know are well aware of the value of stalking as they get bombarded with requests I wish you luck though fella and you don't get anything by not trying. As to your question a/b/c/d etc I would have to be ( f ) as I am fortunate to own the land I stalk on.
  19. http://i1041.photobucket.com/albums/b411/Bigboregunner/Stalking/DSC00046.jpg This malform had alladins slippers, don't know if its significant or it sustained an early injury
  20. Im not far from you and have shot a few red/roe malforms I reccon its genetics especially with reds from a small gene pool most of the roe malforms have had sustained some kind of injury
  21. I had a terrific day with the lads over in wales, it was a bit dissapointing that Mark was let down at the very last min some guns but thats their loss. Plenty of sporting birds to go at and we all had plenty of shooting, i shot testing snipe woodcock and pheasant through out the day and it was certainly worth the trip from yorkshire. Our host Mark and the keeper looked after us well the company was great, the carvery at a local pub was just what the doctor ordered and if i got chance to go again nxt season i would jump at it. df
  22. Kes You are having a laugh arn't you ! Basc saved the day ? Basc staff lied and decieved the membership to steal the licence from the 6 humber clubs that make up the UHWC. When the deception and lies were exposed on another forum, they backed off "partially" an appology form John swift was sent out to the upper humber wildfowl committee but still they continued to put thier oar in one way or another despite assurances. AT this moment in time the licences are still "not" in the hands of the UHWC through the involvment of Basc and their unapropriate actions, although we are "hopefull" that everything will be sorted for the 1st of september. A internal investigation into the conduct of the basc staff responsible has supposed to have taken place, but as yet we have not heard the outcome.
  23. wanted 1" medium blue optilocks or swap for my 1" high set. thanks df
