  2. A while ago my shooting mate invited his cousin and a friend up for a weekends shooting and it finally happened this last weekend. We started on friday morning with decoying geese into a green park that they had been on for a couple of days and had a great morning with everyone having a shot and we ended with 9 geese. The geese came in well in the half light but when the light came in fully there was something putting them off, we never found out what it was but with 9 geese in the bag we were not too worried. Back to mine for a good healthy fry-up before heading out for a walk. One of the boys asked what we would be shooting and I said mostly rabbits and some snipe and theres very slim chance of a wood cock. We parked the car, got over the fence and the first that got up was a woodcock which fell to my second shot, the boys were buzzin. After about 2 hours we had 2 woodcock, 4 snipe and around 40 rabbits they were delighted, grinning from ear to ear. That night we split up and went for a night flight, two of us hoping for duck and the other two after geese but the wind fell away and left us with a big moon shining down on us. We never saw any duck but the other two managed to bag a goose. Next morning saw two of us under a good flight of geese while the other two were trying to decoy geese into another park. We had a good flight and bagged four geese each but the other two had no luck with all the geese passing just wide and a bit high. I couldnt make it out for a walk that afternoon but the three of them went for hike through the hills with one really wanting a grouse and the other wanting a white hare. When they came to mine later I was delighted to hear that the one wanting the grouse had managed a brace of grouse and a golden plover, but unfortunately they hadnt seen any hares. The night flight that night found us at a couple of splashes but again the moon did not help although we couldnt complain, we had two mallard the other two bagged 3 geese and a teal. On saturday morning we spotted a good flight line that we thaught we would try on monday morning which worked out well as on monday morning we all got birds again and left for the car with 8 geese and plenty of smiles all round. After breakfast we headed into the hills to look for a hare. We had a good walk and after seeing plenty of hares, all of which were out of range, I heard a bang. When I caught up with them I was delighted to see that the one that wanted a white hare had one in the bag. On the way back to the car I got one too. That night, which was their last, we went to another couple of splashes. After about 20 minutes it was clear that we were in the wrong place, we hadnt seen a thing while the other two were getting plenty action judging from the bangs. We left for the car with nothing and met the other two with 6 teal, 1 wigeon and 3 mallard. Its not often everything goes to plan but i think this last weekend went as near to plan as anyone could wish for, I think they will be back. The one thing that is really anoying me and i am kicking myself for is that i took no pictures, one of the boys took quite a few so hopefully he will send me some. Hope this didnt bore the knackers off you, just thought i would share my enjoyable weekend.
  3. i have done really well with hull high pheasant 32 gram 5's (lighter recoil than the black golds i usually use). i have had some good kills on duck this season and the last. hull still have three crowns on their web site, its under traditional game loads.
  4. looks and sounds like a great day out
  5. My favourite bit of flood water filled up this week so I was keeping an eye on it for yesterday morning. Quite a few mallard and teal were on it on thursday and friday, it was looking good. I checked the forecast which said SSW wind 4-5 which was perfect. At 6.00 am quite a few birds got up on my arrival which set the blood pressure up a bit. I headed to my favoured spot where there is plenty cover among dry stone walls and threw out half a dozen mallard decoys, made the gun ready and poured a cup of coffee. Sitting with the wind and decoys at my back I had not been aware of any birds moving until i looked arround at the decoys and found to my surprise six mallard right in the middle of my six fake mallard 15 yards away. What to do? I knew that if i put them up they would head straight away from me and I wouldnt get a shot for the the house (you can see in the photo). I thought the best chance would be to get the dog to jump over the wall and put them up that way they might circle round for a look once in the air. It worked a treat, the birds got up, headed straight for the house, started to circle back over just a little too wide but one broke off and came over me which dropped to my shot. After my shot there was 30 odd mallard in the air, most dissapeared but one group of about 10 circled over me and I mannaged a shot which brought down the leading bird from a good height. After a bit of a wait one mallard came past. He was a long way out but turned to a couple of loud hail calls (a bit yankee I know) and came over for a look, some low feeding calls for some reassurance and she came in perfect and dropped to the shot. With a small job to go to and the flight drying up i was happy enough with my 3 mallard and headed home. Three mallard a happy dog and an unlucky rabbit that came out of the wall just along side me.
  6. this comes and goes from time to time but this time its taken a good hold. not sure if i am going to shake it this time. i think this could be the time that i put in a variation for a .22-------------------------------------semi auto . what should i do, should i keep fighting it or just go for it. it would be good to hear from anyone that has been affected with this before.
  7. i use one on my SX3 and i find i really miss it if i forget to take it.
  8. heres mine, hopefully getting something else done next spring when we are down in edinburgh.
  9. i got mine done last year at tribal tattoos edinburgh http://www.tribalbodyart.co.uk/
  10. i loved the winchesters too but my supply ran dry. just bought 200 RC50's the other night for £96 (cheaper than the mammoths and the fiocchies i used last year) couldnt get the 0's so i got no3's instead, used them yesterday morning to bag 5 greylags all dead as dead can be.

  13. its still ok in scotland as long as its not over wetlands http://www.basc.org.uk/en/utilities/document-summary.cfm/docid/D5C9615C-C762-40F1-8AD9E3509B0B46E2
  14. not necessarily, depends where you are shooting
  15. i have a lot of time for RC50 50 gram size zero. i never usually go above a number 3 in lead as i have never found a BB shell that patterns well enough in my gun but these are between a no3 and BB and pattern very well through half choke in my sx3, as long as i can get them i cant see me changing
  16. i have the same one and find the layout good for what i want to put in it
  17. good on you for watching the whole process. we have had 10 pigs in total now, all bought as weaners and and fattened up over the summer and slaughtered here at home. i find the whole process very rewarding. to know that the animal has been looked after and treated very well from the day it arrived to the day it comes out of the oven is very satisfying.
  18. good lookin hound and well done on the wigeon
  19. next time i am up there i will take some pics. i think the turf is now on the roof, hopefully it will stay on, bad time of year to be putting turf on a roof.
  20. now that the viking longhouse is nearly done we have been taken off it so that the other squad of boys can finish the inside which is a shame as i would have liked to have worked on it right to the end. then again i cant grumble as we have been put to sumburgh head light house which is only 10 minutes from my house instead of two and a half hours to the long house and its a stunning place to work (on a nice day). the job is the restoration of the light house buildings which is a massive job compaired to anthing else i have worked on. the winter weather is something i am not looking forward to though, its 91 meters above sea level and a tad exposed which light houses tend to be. heres a couple of photos, the first one is not mine but the other two is ones i took off the roofs we were stripping.
