  1. nothing exciting just thaught i would share. woke up to this sun rise this morning, took the pic from my front door.
  2. wildfowler.250, its just the breasts, no bone. wild duck + cooked rare = :unsure:
  3. no foxes up our way i am quite surprised at the size of them because the park these were shot in is very heavily shot.
  4. after everyone saying about the size of the rabbits and me thinking they were quite big too i had to nip out and have another look so i have just come back in. this is the biggest one of the five in the photo, he weighed in at 3lb 15oz and was 25.5 inches from front paw to back paw. now that i have done all that i am not sure how that compairs to an average one ha ha ha :wacko: :wacko:
  5. the photo is a bit out of proportion but the rabbits were really big for some reason. as for meat damage it depends where they are hit and the range, sometimes you can hardly tell other times its a bit of a mess.
  6. they did seem very big . i saw 2 rabbits tonight with maxi which is something i havnt seen in shetland for a very long time .
  7. go for a pair of these, they are fantastic. i am on my second pair now and as long as i can get them i cant see me changing. they are light, very comfy and the thing i like best is the zip down the side (not because i cant tie laces :blink:). they are like wearing slippers even when brand new. probably more expensive than you are looking for but certainly worth it. http://www.outlandsa...up_safety_boot_
  8. went for a quick bang with my hornet tonight before putting the kids to bed. this is 5 of the 23 i shot in 40 minutes. havnt had the hornet long, so far 45 grain ppu seems to be about the best accuracy wise, sellier and bellot has the edge but its twice the price. i have tried a few home loads but still not bettering the ppu which is grouping at about an inch at 100.
  9. i was 11 when i started going out with my uncle, i had been shooting rabbits with an air rifle for a couple of years before that. when i was 13 i got a SGC so that i could use the single 20 bore that my uncle had. that was at the start of the 96/97 season and looking back in my diary i had 2 mallard and a greylag for that whole season. when i think back i feel bad for my uncle because i would phone every single friday night without fail to see if we were shooting on the saturday, he must have had a lot of patience with me.

  12. i boil all the ducks and geese i shoot (except when making Polish goose). i used to roast mallard but truthfully 99% of them was really dry and tough even when stuffed and covered with bacon. all i do with mallard now is boil it with some salt till it leaves the bone, its really moist and tender and still tastes good. another thing it does is takes away the strong bloody taste if a bird is a bit shot up. it sounds a bit bland but once its boiled it can be crisped up in a hot hot frying pan or heated up in a stir fry and its still tender and moist. the one thing i cant eat is wild duck or goose cooked rare, flashed up in a frying pan or roasted for 20 minutes IMO is just not nice. sirloin steak on the other hand...... edited to say that some birds take longer to boil than others. the other night i boiled up 3 mallard and a wigeon, the wigeon and two of the mallard took just over 2 and a half hours and the other mallard was over 3.

  14. we have just finished scoffing up two greylags from the weekend, done chinese style. yesterday i took the four breasts and boiled them for just under 3 hours, (or till they were nearly falling appart). today i took the cooled meat and broke it up into bite sized bits and threw it in some very hot olive oil in the wok and crisped it up and right at the end put in a good sized splash of light soy sauce. it was just like the crispy duck you get from the chinese takeaway. i then heated up some uncle bens vegetable rice and some hoi sin sauce and hey presto chinese greylag. the whole family liked it so thats a success in my books .
  15. last season and so far this season i have been using RC50 no 0 through half choke and i have had some great results. for non toxic the best i have used was the winchester xtended range hi density but it was pricey.
  16. three of us went for a bang yesterday morning on some fresh cuy barley where i had seen quite a lot of greylags and mallard working. the mallard came in early as usuall and they came in perfectly to the mojo which was sitting within arms reach of my mates layout blind, we shot 8 mallard and decided that was enough. we always keep the mojo close so that if geese decide to come we can take it down and cover it with barley because we have found that the geese really dont like it. the geese started to come but none were too keen to commit, then i got a phone call from another shooter phoning to see how we were getting on only to find out that they shot the same park the morning before grrrrrrrrrrr. we persevered and sat for a while since it was a nice day (too nice for fowling) and ended up with 9 geese between us. i think if we had more wind we might have done better but we really cant complain. this is a pic of where the fowl was coming from behind us, as you can see, nice morning as far as the weather was concerned.

  18. there was a father and son that started shooting on a couple of the farms that i shoot on and the mess they made was terrible. in one park i picked up empty shells till my pockets could hold no more and there was still scores of emptys laying all over the place with them shooting rabbits out of a disco with semi auto shotguns. i phoned the farmers and let them know what i had found and let them know that it wasnt any of us local boys. one of the farmers was quite mad because his silage mower has metal detectors on it and shuts down when it comes across metal e.g fence wire etc, and sure enough it shut down quite a few times the following summer because of spent shells. funny enough i havnt seen the father son duo this neck of the woods for a while
  19. once when i was working to this small firm there was an old guy that was helping me level up a concrete shutter with a laser level (first one he had seen) and he said "we will have to watch that the batteries dont run flat as the laser might droop down at the ends" :o :o :o
  20. had a cracking night flight last night, me and my pal went to bit of flood water between 2 lochs. as soon as we got there duck started to move, some coming off the loch heading to a bit of barley that had been cut others coming from the barley to the loch to have a wash and a drink. there was a good stiff south westerly blowing and the birds were coming tail to wind and turning on top of us. it was a frustrating hour of shooting as the birds were out of range then all of a sudden you could poke them with the barrels and when you could have a shot they were a nightmare to see against the hill. after too many shots to mention on here we had 5 mallard, 4 wigeon and a teal.
  21. good stuff. cant wait till the barley gets cut here, it has been such a poor growing year this year up here that the barley is at least a month late. i did see a combine out today so maybe come the weekend there might be a chance at some duck. well done
  22. glad you liked it. my wife just said that you need just enough water to cover, so maybe you have put in too much. the recipe works well with any fowl or game. this time of year when the ducks are stobbly and a nightmare to pluck clean i just breast them and use them in this same recipe (not sure if stobbly is a word but i am sure you all know what i mean ).
  23. i must have a family of gannets because i have never had any left to heat up :lol:
