  1. I'm on LinkedIn, although the benefits for me have been fairly limited at the moment as I'm still a student. However, I have connections with a few people on there and it has links to my professional website and so on so it serves as a good way to advertise myself. Part of my course is to establish a professional presence before we finish the degree hence already having a website, LinkedIn and so on.
  2. I must admit, I'm not a fan of big scale camping with a castle sized tent and all the amenities of home. Granted one thing that is a must is a good shower, and running water. Beyond that I'm not fussed. Everything I take must fit in one ruck sack and if the tent can fit more than two people its too big. Then again I'm one of those odd people who walks 30 miles a day and climbs mountains with all my stuff on for my amusement. I do agree though, camping done right is absolutely fantastic!
  3. I'll stick a couple of pictures up later, just because you asked so nicely
  4. If you've owned or own a vdub, then you're in! We're all a big family really.
  5. I thought some of my friends were a bit soft taking along extra thick roll mats, then I read PW's suggestions! You're a plank away from 'camping' in a hut with a soft bed . If you're camping on an actual site, they will more than often have half decent facilities including showers and running water so no need to worry about having no water. Basics include a tent (obviously), sleeping bag, roll mat (dirt cheap in the right places, like a few pounds), at the very least spare undies and socks especially if you're to do any significant walking the day before or after, cooking method such as disposable bbq or trangia (I recommend trangia no end) cooking on a fire is fun, but its an acquired skill and can easily leave you with no food or food poisoning, neither of which is fun. Food, again an obvious one but make it dried or tinned, avoid things that need to be cooled unless you're willing to take a cool box. Basic washing kit, smelly people are no fun. If you take a trangia, you can eat out of the pans. Take a cloth and you can rinse them when done under a water tap. Knife, fork, spoon. Matches and tinder (not the app, something to start a fire with) you should get it all in a rucksack with room to spare for plenty of additional 'fluids' and snacks. Would recommend taking some decent boots too if you have a fire, you'll see why when it comes to it. I've done plenty of camping, and come across plenty of wet, cold and hungry teenagers who have done camping the wrong way. Don't be one of them!
  6. Anyone going to Stamford Hall this coming weekend?
  7. Eccleston and his glorified go-karts thread? Missed the coverage of the bribery trial, how did it go?
  8. I know the look! Looking a tad dishevelled after doing exhibitions in London for 5 days, I took some fellow students to William and Sons and then on to J Purdey on the corner. William and Sons were great, nice chat with the resident gunsmith, friend bought a tie and off we went. When we got to Purdeys I almost thought the man on the door was going to refuse us entry with the look we got, and the staff eyed us up like we came out the wrong end of a horse. A tactfully loud remark about how I was unimpressed by Purdey guns and thought Holland and Holland were far superior got me some unforgiving looks from the staff but it amused me.
  9. There's unoriginal and then there's out right copying. If someone were to google your concept and find a product that was near identical with ease, then I expect (and hope) there would be a drop in marks. Being totally original is hard, but doing your research is not. Good research is the basis of good design.
  10. Overall I enjoyed it, and those presenting it. Although we thought it made restoration look far too easy. To do it in 8 weeks is an incredible feat, to compress it into just a few minutes doesn't do it justice.
  11. So do I, even considered making one but there's far too much work involved for it to be feasible for me. Maybe some enterprising engineer on PW will see this and consider knocking a few kits out. Hint hint, nudge nudge. Could probably make good money from it, too.
  12. Judson!!!!! If anyone has one, or knows of someone who has one, please please please drop me a message! Sorry, carry on.
  13. There's some very nice stuff owned by PWers! I'm currently running a 1960 bug, resto-cal look but with a few additions here and there. Stripped out and painted interior (because carpets and head linings are expensive!) Quick shifter fitted, all 4 gears now use the space that used to be 1st alone, its fantastic! Fibreglass wings and US spec indicators. The engine is a standard 1200 but thats going to change in the fairly near future unless I can find a vintage super charger (Anyone got a Judson?)
  14. Inspired by the classic car thread, I'm wondering how many VDubbers there are on PW, classic or otherwise? Anyone running (or used to run) anything interesting?
  15. PW Dubbers association, bugs and busses welcome, type 3 owners have to look shifty in the corner.
  16. The best choice by far is an early Beetle, pre '65 if possible. Mini's are easy to work on, and beetles are so much easier than them! Air-cooled 1200 engine thats pretty much bomb proof, will keep working with even harsh abuse. Easy to service, easy to fix. If you're after a none standard car you can make it just how you like it, they are like a giant mecharno set. Narrowed beams, more wheel choices to shake a stick at, so many accessories. The engine can be changed very easily, too. Don't like 1200s? Buy (or build) a 1300, 1500, 1600. Why not go the full length and stick a 2300 in it, twin carbs, the lot. Road car, racer, high performance cruiser, drag racer, a Beetle can be almost anything you want it to be. I've worked on a lot of classic cars, and the bug is one of the best choices around.
  17. I did something similar (we had 6 hours, rather than 30. Couldn't leave the room all day, all very boring.) when I did my GCSE in Res Mat. Did PD at A level and currently doing Furniture and product design at Uni so feel free to drop me a message. I may not be able to help with exam style and things but you can run ideas by me. Have plenty of years of design education behind me as well as working with industrial clients on live projects.
  18. ****** nicked my car/fence/dog/wife so lets complain about the local council. Walkers passed within a quarter mile of my hide, is it time to lay mines? Gun kicking more than usual, on an unrelated note these new 72 gram loads are great. And last of all, Why can't I hit rabbits?
  19. Cider maker myself! Done on a student buget, too. Made various apple ciders of varying qualities and alcohol content levels, some pretty close to undrinkable (although they were drunk, students can't be too picky) some down right fantastic and in my opinion better than a lot of shop bought ciders. Made a few mixed fruit ciders, too. Just got home to find one I made earlier had fermented much more vigorously than expected and blew off the air lock, I now have raspberry pulp on the ceiling.
  20. Well then, with two boxes ticked its looking like I'm going to have to start worrying a little!
  21. I won't worry until Merkel becomes portly, grows a big curly moustache and puts on a Picklehaube, and by that time we'll all be polishing our brasses and tightening our puttees.
  22. The tyres on my Beetle are unnamed other than a serial number, and the documentation says there were fitted in 1968. Although I admit my milage is limited and they will need replacement in the near future, I'd say they have held out quite nicely.
  23. Thanks very much! Uni's going very well, thanks. Although the expected student life of sleeping till 4pm and 5 hours of lectures a week has proved to be quite the opposite of the reality! Hope you're doing well yourself! Also a big thanks to everyone, PW has accounted for 82% of the results and has provided by far the most useful feed back!
  24. Pretty much, yes. Although for one reason or another he can't actually say coffee tables, I think because ot excludes low level permanent fixings or some such.
