I had looked at FUDs but couldn't decide whether they would resist the pull of the tide well enough, as I say it's a harbour rather than a river or similar and the tidal current isn't generally that strong. I had considered a few to bolster the pattern ashore, but would I not be forever moving them back as the water rises? I had envisaged putting the deeks out on a motherline and staking the motherline a la Chris Green's method, which allows you to pull the stake (cane) when the flight is done from the bottom mud and hopefully retrieve all of the deeks. they would be initially just about floating but in much deeper water by the time I'm packing up.

... pedantic, but all the same. -
Not twice, surely?

It's going to be my first fumblings with decoying so I'm sure things will change and evolve in set up along with season as i find out what i need to. Fortunately the club members are pretty friendly but I won't get to see most of them until season start and was going to get something in place for mid september ideally. Cheers for the comments.

Could be tricky. Last sason saw Teal, Wigeon, Mallard and Pintail among others, lots of Wigeon though. Should add that I'm shooting Chichester harbour again this year though.

Well done on steering your mate away from near disasater. As I said above, you can use some steel through standard barrels etc etc etc, by that I meant standard pressure loads as advised by many sources. You've just said that "you can use nearly all 70mm steel(size 4 or smaller) shells in most 2 3/4" or 3" chambered guns", but followed that up with "beretta have said that the al390/al391 were not steel proofed they never said that they "would blow up",it's upto you if you want to take a chance", but you've also said that it's "case closed" due to the email received from GMK saying they wouldn't use it. Can you not see the contradictions here? Long and short of it as far as I'm concerned is that I have no issues with putting standard loads through my Beretta A301 despite it not being steel proofed. You don't have to if you don't want to and everybody else can make their own informed choice. -
As per the title. What duck decoys do you use and would you recommend them, if so why? I'm going to be using them on the marsh so it will be tidal, albeit not hugely strong currents.

Hi 12boreblue, although I'm on the south coast I do get up to Caterham occasionaly for both clays and a rough shoot there. Always welcome to meet up for either, PM me some details and I'll let you know when I'm coming up, or you can advise if heading this way.

Now that's just being silly. The shells physically won't fit and as such can't be used, everyone knows that. But you can shoot some steel through standard barrels without blowing them up, so say BASC and Gamebore amongst others as well as me, having tried it. Despite Berretta saying they would not, it has been shown that you can, even if you aren't prepared to do so. So, hardly case closed is it? -
I don't think there is a problem per se, I'd like to know how well steel shoots through different chokes in the semi auto to determine the best choke, as well as whether it shoots as flat as I believe it to. I'd also like to know how high the o/u shoots (which once again I believe it to, gunfit may be an issue here too though) as well as a few different carts through it to see if there's much difference and whether it's worth paying a premium for certain cartridges.

So, that's two reasons to come and have a chat with you now! I spoke with Greg Swan a few months ago via FB and he told me they didn't have one, hence my comment about local clubs not having a plate.

I'm with you on that one, Smith doesn't seem to have the killer instinct. Scott on the other hand seems happy to duke it out with anyone.

Apparently... The webley raider is a basic pcp which is good value for the money , shot count for a .22 would be around 50---60 shots per fill. This would suggest 40-50 for a .177. Normally you'd fill to 190 rather than more and expect to be refilling at around 120 bar. Shot consitency should be fairly consistent within those parameters. Pellets will start dropping quite noticeably when pressure becomes too low. You need to put a good few pellets through it and find out for yourself what your gun does though. You should chrono a few different pellets and but most importantly see what your gun 'likes' and chrono those. As I understand it, if the Police chrono it, they will use what you have been shooting with as well as a few others. My Daystate chronos at it's highest with Bisley mags...doesn't mean yours will though. As with any gun, punch paper to find your aim points at different ranges and establish your guns 'sweet spot', that being the pressures at which it starts to shoot consitently and where it stops shooting consistently. So, I've just been looking at the Webley website (to see if it's regulated, it isn't) and for the Raider 10...they say that shot counts are in the low 20's for .177 and .22 which, IMO is really poor!

Indeed, one semi auto and one O/U. Would like to do both ideally with a variety of chokes. It's got to be at least a dozen shots realistically if not a few more. Plus, with the S/A I'm quite keen to try two or 3 different carts. An hour on a pattern plate would be handy, or in a friendly farmers field with a sheet of board and a few rolls of wallpaper!

Unfortunately, I'd be more than surprised if they agreed if I'm honest, but I will ask tomorrow while there.

Right, a quick google shows that it does have an immobilser and indeed the keys are chipped. A Suzuki main dealer will probably be able to supply you new keys and reprogramme them. Just saying as you'll sell it for more if it's running. I'd take it off you at £200 if you weren't the other end of the country, I would do my home work but would expect to have it running for only a couple of hundred quid max.

That's just covering their ***** IMO. While I'd agree that using HP loads would be chancing things, there are hundreds if not thousands of shooters who are putting steel loads through their not steel proofed Beretta barrels. I shot Gamebore Super Steel through a Beretta 301 last year with no visible adverse effect. -
Don't see how they can to be honest. They deemed him sane in order to be able to try him. As far as I can work out, unless he's 'sectioned' or the equivalent, then they can't hold him once he's served his time.
-
Chipped keys have been lost and as such it won't allow it to satrt would be my guess. New barells and keys plus programming I'd imagine.
-
How do you work that one out? If he keeps his nose clean he's out in 21 years or less! A maximum sentence is just that, once it's served they have no choice.
-
Once again i would approach your local trainers. Tell them what you want and they will probably be able to point you in the right direction for breeders. Personally I'd be looking for working parents with ideally a few FTCh in the line, full on trials dogs can be a bit hyper for the field/marsh. Often though they have dogs that they consider aren't quite 'hot' enough for trials and as such they sell them on...but they may well be brilliant field dogs.

I want to pattern my shotguns to determine best choke/cart combinations. I don't have land that I can shoot the shotguns over and my local clay grounds don't have pattern plates! Does anyone know of anywhere that has a pattern plate or anywhere that I could shoot a few shells off if I made up a plate? I am in East Sussex...

Ok, to continue. Spoke with Dennis (nice chap) who advises that the barrel can be bored to take a 3" cart, it will need reproofing for which the responsibility falls on me should it fail. ie, if it fails it's not UK gun repairs fault or problem. Cost all in will be circa £200. So, now I have a dilemma. I use it for wildfowling and as such it gets used with steel shot in accordance with guidelines. What I'm trying to decide is this. Am I better off sticking with the gun I know and love, or, should I bite the proverbial bullet, stop faffing about and trade it in for a steel proofed, 3.5" chambered semi auto made by a well known and castigated turkish manufacturer? I am not in a position to buy another newer Beretta auto and TBH the Hatsan is just about all I can afford at the moment. The other thing weighing on my mind is that while UK guns will carry the work out on the barrel, they won't take responsibility if it fails proofing as a result. Net result being that I'll have a bill for works and no barrel at the end of it. Dennis did say it was unlikely to fail, but...

With regard to training, go and see a professional trainer BEFORE you start training and use them regularly throughout the training. Initially it will teach YOU what to do and just as importantly, what not to do. It's as much about training the trainer. The regular check ups will allow any bad habits either of you may develop to be identified and rectified and additionally you will get another slant on how to overcome the inevitable obstacles. Best of luck, with the correct, quality, training and plenty of time and patience, I'm sure you'll end up with a cracking gundog and companion.
