  1. Thanks kennett, much appreciated reassurance. Sadly however, the gun sold yesterday afternoon. Well and truly kicking myself for not ringing first thing yesterday morning when I saw the listing
  2. Thanks WW that would be great (naturally I will cover the cost). Fingers crossed it's still available.
  3. Thanks gents, most helpful and much appreciated. A shiny barrel whilst looking nice, goes against the grain in the field. Having slept on it I can't pass up at that price. If still there when the shop opens I'll be purchasing and having sent to local RFD. I'll start with crossy's Jake Pyke cover suggestion (thanks chap!) and keep a loose eye out for a replacement blued barrel (thanks WW). Thanks for the advice on the blueing Rem, that's saved a pointless search to try and have blued
  4. Thanks gents, much appreciated reassurance, the resolve is weakening by the minute
  5. lol, hearing you loud and clear WW, me too! However, I've just seen a nearly new Ruger 10/22 with Wildcat Moderator and new Nikko 4-12X50ir scope and mounts for £235. Wanting a quiet (lamping) bunny basher I'm struggling really hard not to snap it up!
  6. Can anyone help with advising whether it is possible to blue a stainless Ruger 10/22 barrel? I plan to use as my rabbit lamping rifle and can pick a nearly new one up with moderator and new Nikko 4-12X50 IR scope and mounts for just £235. Whilst I would prefer a blued barrel so it doesn't stand out like the bulldogs proverbial's, it's hard to pass up at that price. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.
  7. You did well there Si, I bet quite a number of fingers were hovering over this
  8. Thanks AoH, a most helpful post. Returning to the sport and determined not to shoot anything (other than corvids) unless it's for the pot, I have been plucking up the courage to start cooking the rabbits. So far not being at all gifted in the kitchen, I have been practicing the skinning and preparing and have then been passing on the ready to cook samples to an elderly former farmer and several friends (to their great delight). Seeing the above so well presented and in a manner of cooking that I feel confident enough to give a try (BBQ is one area in which I can hold my own), has given a much better idea as to how to get started. I'm much obliged fella
  9. Great pic, he looks well happy
  10. Call it what we will, I know what you mean Traztaz, I've had rabbits flinch/duck just before the crucial moment (with the HMR), causing the shot to go over their heads. Did they hear the round, certainly not, I hadn't (quite) fired at that stage, perhaps it was a sixth-sense Whatever, a .22 round is a lot slower than a .17 HMR, which does give bunnies (a little) more time to react. Do they react based on moderated vs. unmoderated sound on a .22 vs .17 HMR, I don't know but still wouldn't shoot without one. I also wouldn't wish to be very rude in forcefully and totally discounting your perspective.
  11. Global Program Manager for large IT Company
  12. Totally understandable and indeed sensible. May I just ask whether access to that section is granted automatically, or whether one has to request?
  13. Help for Heroes is close to my heart and the primary charity I regularly support. I ran the Chippenham Half Marathon in aid of H4H in 2010 and am doing the Bowood Super Sprint Triathlon this coming Sunday. However, this all pales into insignificance compared to what Christian is doing. I found out about his endeavours when his fundraising was at £17k, gave what I could and like you Gilberts, have followed him ever since. An extraordinary guy doing an extraordinary thing for an amazing cause, supporting those who (literally) gave themselves on our behalf. The least we can all do surely, is pass a few spare pounds his/their way.
  14. Great shooting, I think you got him
  15. Thanks much again gents, he left for a week overseas with work today but be sure we'll be working these fine suggestions on his return. Not sure what ammo he shoots, but that will certainly be the first check followed by removing the mod and then everything else. Much obliged for the most helpful suggestions
  16. Thank you very much gents, some very helpful suggestions there and clearly much to try. The targets are still in the garage, I'll take a pic in the morning. The rounds were falling all over the 4-inches. As a small aside, we were both amazed at the difference in the clarity of our respective optics. I have a Light Stream 4.5-14 x 44 and he a Hawke with illuminated reticule. The eye relief on mine is a little fiddly but the target crystal clear where it was quite fuzzy through his. This really rammed home how better glass is worth the extra money and I think has sold him on acquiring a better scope.
  17. A friend has a new Savage 93BTVS in .22 WMR. He's fired 250 rounds and still can't get the group size at 100m less than 4 inches. I was next to him shooting 1 inch groups with my .17 HMR. We swapped rifles and lo and behold my group with his WMR was 4 inches and his 1 inch with my HMR, so that rules out the shooter. I understand it can take a few hundred rounds through a new barrel until it settles down, but by 250 rounds surely it should be starting to settle? From what I've read in other threads, I believe the WMR is known to not deliver quite as tight groups as the HMR, but is 4 inch really what one should expect from a WMR? He's already swapped the scope and now has a new Hawke. Thanks in advance for any guidance / suggestions.
  18. Until corrected by those of greater experience/judgement, I would go with the direction of those who gave me the permission. i.e. The fist landowner likes to see them around so by all means take one or two, but make sure there are enough left so that he still sees them around. The second, until corrected otherwise, if he is the one who is authorised and has given you the permission, then go with his wishes.
  19. The farmer of my permission likes the hares and doesn't want them touched. They are quite prolific now, but his wishes are his wishes and I respect them. How does the landowner of your permission feel?
