  1. I purchased my Sako Quad HMR in April. Was told it wasn't more than six months old and hadn't fired more than a few hundred rounds. The summer and ~1200 rounds later and I couldn't understand why accuracy had gone from 1" at 100 metres to several inches. Local gunshop looked up the serial number for me and found it over 8-years old. Showed me my barrel up against a new one and mine had practically no rifling left. Replaced barrel and all is back to 'normal'.
  2. Outstanding shooting and superb video, thanks for sharing and congrats on what was clearly a cracking day out.
  3. I'm booked at Corinium over weekend of 22/23 Feb. Very impressed with Paul, friendly and professional and came across very well in the two telephone conversations I've had with him. The Corinium course does extend to the Monday morning (written and range tests), but the close proximity (10-miles away) combined with course dates and the range having over head cover (any fool can be uncomfortable ) clinched it for me. If you don't mind travelling a bit further, Jelen's course has an excellent reputation, includes a learning CD and access to online learning one can work through before-hand and runs from Friday night through Sunday afternoon (a very close second choice for me and would have saved a day off during the week, but added cost with realistically needing B&B for 2-nights and would have to wait until March).
  4. Warne Maxima 1" Tube High (42mm-52mm Objectives) Steel Scope Mounts for Weaver/Picatinny rails. Used once to test a scope on a rifle which has since been returned. As new. £35 posted.
  5. A warm welcome aboard Grayson Chippenham and surrounds is a very nice part of the country, certainly attested by how well attended by shooting folks, so you're in good company
  6. Many thanks indeed Dave, most good of you. Will see what my FEO say's and let you know.
  7. Could one of you possibly post or PM me the exact wording? If possible, I would like to show to my FEO. Thanks Tim
  8. OK thanks Steve, although I'm afraid I'm looking for another 9-round. Best wishes Tim
  9. Sorry, I wasn't very clear. I already have land, which was needed for the initial FAC application. I have just acquired additional land elsewhere, which is where the quandary arises.
  10. A very good thing if your new land isn't yet 'cleared' for the calibres one wishes to use. I have this case right now and the land is in a different county. My FEO has told me it is likely to be some time until cleared and so until then, I can't shoot. I find the whole question of the police having to authorise an individual to shoot a particular calibre on a particular piece of land rather difficult to understand. If we are not responsible or 'experienced' enough to know when a shot is safe, we surely shouldn't have been granted an FAC in the first place.
  11. I wanted to 'hear less' Dekers, that's why I bought one But seriously, I have nothing to compare against. I went purely on the db rating which (per the thread on 'the other side'), I understand is not consistently measured by all manufacturers. All I can say is that my tinnitus is less affected by the (albeit louder) 'boom' of the .243 compared with the (quieter) 'crack' of the HMR (my tinnitus goes haywire after even as few as 20 odd rounds with the HMR).
  12. Everyone is different and some seem to have more sensitive ears/hearing than others. My father suffered significant hearing loss from a single event, firing Bren Guns inside corrugated iron shelters during his National Service (for which he now receives a small pension). I too seem to have inherited the weakness now suffering ~30% hearing loss combined with severe tinnitus). Equally, all through my teens and early twenties, I exposed the ears to excessive noise on an all too frequent basis (walking around the fields with shotgun, firing blanks in the army cadets, live firing with the military, motorcycling with Walkman on, clubbing). I now wear both custom made inserts and Peltor Pro Tac Cans and yet even only having been shooting again for 12-months or so (after a 10-15 year break), the hearing/tinnitus has still got noticeably worse. A good friend has a very similar background, yet has not suffered any hearing loss or tinnitus and even now shoots .22 without any form of hearing protection (although he does put his cans on when I take the .243 out). If I had my time again, I would certainly look after the hearing a lot better and at the very least, invest in and always use a quality set of electronic cans no matter how little or much shooting I did.
  13. My hearing is damaged and so I was seeking maximum noise reduction for my .243. aimZonic seemed to offer one of if not the greatest noise reduction on the market and so liking the look and reviews, I opted for the Cyclone Compact (accepting 1db less reduction than the Cyclone Plus in return for a slightly smaller/lighter mod): If sharing links from other forums is acceptable (my apologies moderators if this is not acceptable), the discussion thread can be found at; http://www.thestalkingdirectory.co.uk/showthread.php/70647-Benefit-(or-otherwise)-of-Large-Moderators?highlight=moderator Oh and my local RFD Dauntsey guns obtained from Alan Rhone 'overnight'.
  14. Indeed and hence why £3 per member would be more equitable than £20-£25 for those who can afford the extra cover. If one just desires insurance as has been discussed, there are providers who just provide insurance. However, BASC provides far more than simple insurance and if I may dare say, if we desire to retain the freedom to enjoy our sport, we should continue to support BASC.
  15. Great stuff David, I hope the proposal gets through. Naturally I would rather pay £3 for the cover and see the cover benefit all members. Equally, if the proposal should (inexplicably) not get through, I would personally rather pay more and have as part of the same policy from BASC than have to look elsewhere. £3 = half a box of cartridges; come on guys We've already seen the effect on the unfortunate few who've found themselves in need yet without the cover.
  16. Totally agree Mossy, it would just be nice to have everything wrapped up in the one policy. It's not logging in that I'm having trouble with David You mentioned that legal expense cover can be added to ones membership and I was just looking to find out how. Or have I misunderstood and it is not yet available even as an optional add-on?
  17. In short David; yes. However, like many on the thread, I wasn't aware that legal cover wasn't covered in the standard BASC membership. I'm also struggling to find out how to add to my membership from within the BASC members area. Please can you point me in the right direction?
  18. Fuds sit up higher from the ground and are so perhaps a little more visible if the grass/stubble is longer, but are a little more awkward and take up a little more space in the daysack. The Neo Pro's are lower profile but can be stuffed into the daysack anyway you wish and still spring out non-the-worse. I have a dozen Neo Pro's and half Dozen FUD's, plus floaters etc.
  19. Outstanding advice Longchalk, most helpful, thanks for sharing
  20. 1 taking the daughter for a walk-around this afternoon. 11604
  21. I was concerned with the very mixed press Hatsan's have had and the age old adage "buy cheap, buy twice". However, it felt good to mount and handle in the shop and the price was naturally very attractive. I've only fired ~15 rounds through it so far (29g 6-shot), but every one cycled perfectly. Initial impressions are very good, the only niggle being the exterior silver chokes against the all black synthetic stock and action.
  22. It was for me without spacers. I was going for the Benelli Premium Plus, until I found they don't even do extra butt spacers period. The Hatsan came with three spares as standard. So, with three spacers it puts the pull to a little over 15".
  23. I was extremely fortunate to have an experienced shooter take me under his wing in my teens. Every Tuesday afternoon as my compatriots headed out to the sports field, he would pick me up and take me for an afternoon learning to shoot Pigeons. Happy days.
