  1. We have a had subarus in the family for the last 35 years..as an all rounder nothing even comes close.
  2. In the mane I think the Dentist was probably ill-advised but the two hunters are a couple of lion cheetahs. When you separate it down to its basic denominator what's the difference between paying to shoot a lion, a deer or a pigeon... Nothing.! All should be done humanely of course and with the proper equipment. As long as the money goes to the right source ( conservation ) I cant see a problem. Although in this case it was probably pocketed by the Hunter and the Land Owner, which is the real crime imo.
  3. Yep and Swinton... Both good until something goes wrong. Read the small print carefully. At that level of premium I imagine you are like me a mature driver with an impeccable insurance record and plenty NCB so you can afford something a little more comprehensive The cheapest is not always the best. I'm with saga for my forester and have been for the last 5 years... £315 fully comp. plus all the bells and whistles.. I had quotes as low as £175 but they didn't have much substance too them. Just remember no matter who is at fault in the case of an accident one insurance company will try and explore every avenue to pin fault on and recover costs from the other, so make sure for the small additional premium you have legal and personal injury cover. Very often the occupants are more badly damaged than the vehicle !
  4. Too dark and ill defined for a immature lesser or greater black headed gull imo. Not big enough for a herring gull either.. Guess we will never know for sure.
  5. Quite so..espionage was never my strong point..and I always crack under torture...howeverr you can all spend the rest of the evening wondering. I did actually meet someone from PW once in fact...I cant divulge his name but he had a pigeon watch badge on. I turfed him out of a 30 acre field because he was effectively poaching.. He perhaps thought I was anti-social too at the time
  6. I love classical guitar..it takes a very special musician to play them well. I'm afraid I have no time for what you youngsters call "modern axemen" ?
  7. I would keep looking at your silly hat and wondering if when you take it off your head is actually the same shape underneath... No I'm not at all antisocial just old and crusty... I spent 20 years in the Army looking after other people, whilst trying to remain invisible at times, some of these tours were extremely unpleasant and its not something I would want to communicate to anybody face to face...and I'm sure they would be very inquisitive.
  8. No-one and I don't intend to. Not that I'm anti social I just prefer my own company these days. Solitude is best when youre out in the country.
  9. Doh....Should have gone to Specsavers ! Art is subjective of course but I think its bloody brilliant...I bet the photo doesn't really do it justice either . I'm going to try and win his next effort,
  10. Its a Buzzard imo. If it were a juvenile gull it could only be either a Black Backed, or Herring Gull juvenile and on both the primaries , secondaries, lesser, median and greater wing coverts are well bordered and defined. Are there any peregrines in the area in fact...they will often take down juvenile buzzards, seem to delight in doing so. I've witnessed this many times on the moors and cliffs around these parts. I Assume the boot is a size 9 or 10 would it be about 2ft 6 from joint to tip Shame it wasn't flipped over it would have been easy to identify then.
  11. I know what you meant and you construed my post correctly.. I think one or two on here do hit the keypad a tad too quickly before really thinking about what they have just read. Its a sad indictment of the times that moral standards have declined excessively in my life time. Nobody really cares anymore. They may say that they do especially after a tragedy like this but after all the rhetoric has died down this lad will be forgotten about by all apart from his immediate family and perhaps the owner of the construction company. Someone should have been looking out for that lad, whether it was his parents, neighbours, older kids or just joe public..but no, we are all so bloody insular these days and nobody really gives a toss.. About time National Service was reintroduced, but that's for another topic.
  12. Impossible though to make any construction site 100% childproof if they have a will to get in some way they will. At a site in Berlin several years ago I witnessed 6 7 & 8 year olds dig a tunnel under 8ft high solid perimeter anti-climb steel hoarding and that was after digging a scrape in a tarmac footpath as well.! What concerns me most is the fact that you cannot leave a child home alone at 7 years old but its OK to boot them out onto the street it seems. No doubt if it was a tragic accident the construction company will be made scapegoat. My Kids lived on an Army compound for most of their childhood, but they were still in bed at a time corresponding to their age and in all cases before 9 even in the height of summer. Sadly moral society as been undermined in post war Britain to the extent that Darwins theory of evolution seems to be in reverse.
  13. Sorry not me ..MBE is enough imo. I don't believe any sportsman or woman should get a Knighthood, especially one in a minority sport. Nothing against George he is a nice chap, but I have my principles.

  15. I don’t doubt he’s very good at riding a bike and will make an absolute fortune out of it.. well done to the man.. but you seem to be missing my point.. does he deserve a knighthood before say Nurse Jones who has devoted her life to the care of terminally ill children at her local hospice.? I don’t believe personally that any professional sportsman should receive a knighthood.
  16. I bought a vehicle from them last year...haggled a bit, paid cash but got a good deal ( for both of us) Very pleasant and obliging and attended to a couple of minor defects very quickly. Give them a ring before you travel and I'm sure you will be well accommodated.
  17. Sussex and the South downs are its strongholds.
  18. Sorry but butterflies and moths are my area of speciality. You are correct they are mainly migrants but In the south there are pockets of residents that breed on wild madder, bedstraws and valerian, My late Fathers garden near Burford had a population which regularly produced caterpillars that emerged or overwintered in the outbuildings and greenhouse. The adults are now known to survive mild winters but more often than not will perish when its cold. There are also at least 30 other day time active moths. Burnett and Cinnamon, Small yellow underwing amongst them. Golden Rod, Scabious, Phlox, Jasmin and any species of Buddleia will attract them also particularly honey suckle If you want them to hang around for a while whilst being photo'd spray a single buddleia head with a dilute sugar solution with a mister. They have very good memories and will return to the food source again and again and surprisingly at similar times. Up close they make a noise like a hummingbird too.
  19. Thanks.. I will give it a go..my eldest was a good footballer ( played in the old second division) I will get him to pick a few for me.
  20. Are we now going to see "arise Sir Chris." ? I don't agree with sporting Knighthoods to be honest, and they should be reserved for those that make a manifest contribution to better the lives of those in the community less fortunate without making a pile out of doing so. any thoughts ?
  21. How does one apply to join the league..? Is there a link to a web site. Sorry not too good at this sort of thing but I'm keen to have a go.
  22. I don't do politics much I'm afraid...I vote and whoever gets the ascendancy by democratic process then I support them in the main. That said the SNP landslide is possibly the best thing that could have happened to labour outside of Scotland in the long term. Within 5 years Scotland will have another referendum on independence and it will happen. SNP have only stifled the Labour vote and perhaps served the bigger purpose of keeping UKIP out of the commons ( which can only be a good thing in my opinion) I think the Labour vote will recover very quickly before the next election mainly at the expense of UKIP. They are still the only viable alternative to the conservatives and I don't think it matters much who the interim leader is...they need to get some stability, appoint a driver, and then they can get the right person in before the next GE ...someone will come forward and blossom in the next few years.
  23. So much misleading information is posted about log burners, flues, chimneys, etc etc on this forum and others. I installed my first in 1969 two days after Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon. I've lit them the same way since. Use some of the mother logs as kindling, I normally sacrifice a couple of dozen of each load and spend a day chopping kindling with a sharp axe and store it in the garage in a hessian sack. Then just a zip firelighter 6 - 8 pieces of kindling in a pyramid and add a couple of smaller logs as it gets going... Never took more than 15 minutes to get a good blaze. You can burn any wood but softwood (sappy wood) tends to spit. As long as you have the chimney swept before the start of each season, especially if you do burn a lot of softwood, you will be fine, If you can stand the logs up so that they burn with the grain so much the better. An old woodsman I used to work for told me this in the late 50's " That's the way it grows that's the way it likes to burn he used to say " When the fire gets going I usually do this by leaning the logs against the back plate.
