killer_pigeon
I have narrowed it down to two choices Sako Quad and Anshutz 1517 Its to be used for rats, bunnys, squirrels, hares and maybe crows at distance the Sako is a bit bigger and heavier but looks the business with 22" barrel Anshutz is lightweight, German precision & build, 18" barrel Both have threaded barrels and 5 magazine carts. Bloke in the shop said the sako suited me as i'm 6'4" tall and it looked proprtional I dont really like the smaller 14" barrel rifles so i am going to choose one of the 2 above, just need some opinions please as i really cannot decide. (If i took the sako i would not bother with any other barrel just the 17HMR one) Many thanks in advance
badshot
I have a quad and it is stunningly accurate. The rifle is capable of more than me at the moment. If you are going to be using from inside a vehicle get a whisper or dm80 mod as it keeps the overall length down a bit. The trigger is adjustable fairly easily and has a nice "feel". The bolt action is good straight out of the box and gets even better with a few rounds through it. Overall it is a very nice gun to use and has accounted for 500 rabbits this year so far. Not sure it is a ratting gun but if it is safe it will certainly do the job. I think it is really a case of what floats your boat.
Nelly T
I have a Quad in 17HMR, just put a Zeiss Conquest 6.5-20 x 50 on it, out last after zeroing last week, 5 shots, 4 rabbits and a fox! all rabbits head shot out to about 100yards maybe (nothing realy spectacular), I also have a Sako Finnfire 22lr, both guns will out shoot me all day long. I am getting 1/2" groups with the .22 at 50 yard zero and 1" groups with HMR at 100 yards. You would not be dissapointed with either gun, they are both well made and very accurate. Raja Clavata
I have a couple of Quads and like them very much. But the Anschutz is meant to be very good too. It was the synth stock that swung it for me. Go with what feels most comfortable You are unlikely to be disappointed by either I suspect. webber
What you look like with a rifle matters nought. Its what you can do with it that counts. I have a Sako .22 LR, had the barrel shortened, its a superb rifle, I would not part with it. I also have a .17HMR Anschutz, thumb hole stock. Ultra precision, also a pleasure to shoot. The Anschutz only has a magazine capacity of 4, but I would recommend buying 2 magazines for which ever rifle you decide on. Having spent good money on a good rifle don't forget to do the same, and buy a top quality scope. webber
Baldrick
Get something with a 16" barrel - anything longer is excessive and unwieldy. And buy an Anschutz.
mr salt
Both guns will out shoot most of us. All I can say is pick up both guns ,buy the one that feels best for you. They are both good ,its your money and your choice. Also it will be you shooting it. Sod what others tell you, what write ups say,go with what you want. good choice either way cheers scott
dieseldogg
First & formost I would be an Anschutz fan and forby I had taken "umbrage" at the gimmicky idea of the Sako Quad However having tried both, I fell in love with, well sortof ( & i'm 50) the Quad It also suited as I could reasonably get both the .22LR & .17HMR in one gun Since I cannot shoot the HMRe due to velocity restrictions at my club, I require the .22 to zero on club ranges & i really suspect that I will prob use the .22 barrel more than the .17HMR cheers M

bennyblanco
I would be inclined to have a look at the stock on any potential anschutz purchase, for a couple of years most new ones I have seen come with an awful bit of wood that looks like its been finished with cuprinol fence paint. I would find that hard to swallow with the price they go for but luckily own a thumbhole walnut 1517 18" which has been an excellent hunting gun. I have never used a quad but own a Sako finfire .22 which is my favourite gun but rarely used due to the ricochets, Sako do make very good guns although I hated the synthetic quad when it was released-the walnut stocked varmint looks like a stunner and if I was in the market for a new HMR that would be the 1st one I looked at. http://www.sako.fi/sakoquadmodels.php?varmint
