i'm not sure if this has been mentioned before on this thread, but for those of you that use nicotene replacement devi ces,Boots the chemist are offering a very good scheme at the moment. All you do is go into any branch of Boots and sign up for their quit smoking course (i'm going tomorrow at 10a.m). They will charge a one time payment of the equivalent value of a single prescription (about £7:20) and will provide you with an 8 week supply of patches, gum or inhalators, whatever suits you best. You have to go back each week for a progress report and collect your next weeks supply or maybe it's just 3 times you have to go back i'm not sure, but it still will save you a lot of money. My missus said a pack of nicorette gum was about £20 for a big pack. For anyone that does not payfor their prescriptions, the service is free. A pretty good offer i thought.

That sounds like a really great deal there Johnboy, well worth mentioning! That is an incredible saving on what it would cost you if you had to buy your NRT things weelky out of your own pockets.

If you are thinking of quitting smoking as much for financial reasons as for health reasons (Even though the health side of things should come first) then the best way to look at it is to think how much you would be spending on tobacco each week and then think how much the NRT would cost you, and you will realise that you are starting to save money straight away as well as the great benefit to your health!

To all of you that are trying to quit - Stick with it, it's so well worth it in the end! If need be look at it as a challenge, it's you against the tobacco, and we all know a man's pride does not like him being beaten by a small thing like a ciggy!

Got to tell you all what happened over the weekend:

Went out to a dinner on Friday night, had a few pints and some lovely food, got home a bit pi**ed around 12am. Slept!

Went shooting Saturday afternoon, not much about but an enjoyable hours fresh air. Where's this going.

Going out drinking and going out shooting were 2 places where i really enjoyed a smoke.

Realised whilst driving home from shooting that i hadnt thought about having a smoke at all, neither on Friday or Saturday!

Good result me thinks! :good:

Good God Cosd, £6.00 for a pack of 20, that's incredible! Just think, on that reasoning alone if you smoke just 20 a day it is costing you £42.00 per week or £168.00 per month. If you quit and put that money by you could buy a bloody marvelous brand new gun of your dreams in no time at all. Or better still if you put the money by over 12 months that would be £2016.00 you could put towards a wonderful holiday or a new car.

My mother used to say that smoking was "money going up in smoke", now I can fully understand what she meant!

For those of you that have quit, enjoy your "new found wealth", I know I am, and for those of you that are thinking of quitting: How much more incentive do you want?

p.s. I've just passed 3 months without smoking, that's a real milestone for me, I've got my new 17HMR and I am expecting to pay for and collect my Ruger 10/22 within the next fortnight (That would have been sooner but I had to re-tax the 4X4 at the beginning of January...........................And I'm feeling great!

That's right mate, in fact only this weekend I was trying to explain to the wife that since I had quit smoking and with all the money I am saving, that I want to treat myself to a 4x4. It took her a while to do the maths :good: but being that I'm looking at a Discovery3 2004/5 and I have not smoked for 25 days, she doesn't think I have saved enough :good::lol: she thinks

Still off it and going good, not even counting days. Strikes me that there may be a trick most people are missing in that they see themselves as 'trying to quit' which adds a lot of pressure cos its always at the front of your mind. Surely if you haven't had one for a bit and have no intention of doing so, you already HAVE quit the habit and can move on. Positive attitude?

Very good point mate and the Positive Attitude is extremely important!

You are either quitting or you are not quitting, there's no half way!

Help me out here, but this was summed up by the mighty Jedi Master Yoda and I cant remember how it went, something about 'doing or not doing, there is no try'? Can someone remember this and post it (at the risk of taking a mighty beating of course)!!!

I can now see this thread is going to go downhill at speed!!

  • 3 weeks later...

It is quit true, we should all be saying "We ARE quitting smoking" rather than saying "We are TRYING to quit smoking". There is a hell of a difference, if we say that we are trying something it infers that we are not sure if we will be able to continue it, that is using a negative attitude! A positive attitude is so important when you are changing your life, and mark my words, that is what we are doing when we quit smoking, we are making a major change (For the better) to our lifes!

For those of you that have quit already and for those of you that are in the process of quitting I wish you well, stand firm and stick with it!

OK guys, latest update, still haven't had a fag since Jan 1, feel much better now in the way of cravings; If I get stressed out though my mind goes straight to wanting a fag, so I still carry my nicotine inhaler.

To summarise, day 50 today without a fag!!

How's the rest of the "new year stoppers" doing? Anyone going to confess failing? Anyone going to confess failing but need encouragement to try quitting again? Anyone who just wants to give it a go a pack it in?

:good: Well done fella.

I did a month from new year. Had an absolute mare of a day where I could have near murdered someone I was in such a foul mood and had a cig whilst having 10 minutes to myself. That was my downfall. One led to another etc etc etc. I need to stop though now not just for me but so I can enjoy my kids and grandkids later on in life. My biggest struggle is when we go sea fishing. Once i've cast out and sat down waiting I get bored. Most of the fags I have are through boredom.

I turn 38 on monday and don't want to smoke much longer after that day. Once my foot is sorted I have also decided to get back to full fitness like I used to have when I raced bikes. It's not just a case of i'd like to do it, I NEED to do it before it's too late to enjoy life.

Well done Mr Lee for coming on and confessing to going back on 'em.

Good luck when you try again, and don't forget to keep us updated with your progress.

I must admit when I'm in the hide I really miss lighting up too! But I carry my inhaler and so far so good!!

I might give one of those inhalers a go. I think one of my biggest problems is boredom with my hands when waiting for something. Hence reaching for a cig.

I've found the inhaler to be really good, and it ain't so much the nicotine fix you get, because you are supposed to put in a new capsule every time you fancy a fag (up to 12 a day), I put 1 in yesterday and the time before that was over a week ago, but I still have it hanging out my mouth quite often in the day!!

I think it's a phsycological thing of having something in your mouth........................now I know that sounded really wrong!!

An old Boy sat down and had a pint with a few of us youngsters at a Welsh festival back in the 90's, he pulled out a plastic tube shaped like a cigarette and stuck it in his mouth.

He said, that every time he went for a pint, he had to suck on this plastic tube for the first few minutes, after that he did not miss a fag. He hadnt smoked for 17 years! :good:

Maybe it is psychology!
