Catamong
I went to the Annual A1 SG Helice / ZZ shoot on Saturday and met up with some old friends, the weather was cold, but kind, wind not too strong for a change. The ZZ competition was over 20 targets, it's not the most popular discipline because it costs the earth to shoot it, (£50 for 20 targets.. B) , that'll make Essex Man wince..??, also it takes an age to shoot, there's lots of standing around 'cos you only shoot 2 targets then come off the stand for a wait..!! Here's an early competitor during the warm up session, the 5 traps are clearly visible: Now, here's a close up of one of the traps being loaded: Here's Andy holding a ZZ target, in order to "kill" it you must knock out the white centre piece, which must fall within the semi circular ring beyond the trap houses. Any falling outside the ring are counted as "lost". Here's a better picture, note the pellet marks on the target, you need a bit of choke plus large size shot to guarantee a "kill". I tried to change my chokes but found they were "welded" in, (must get around to cleaning it sometime ), so I had to shoot it with 1/4 & 3/8 This guy came all the way down from "Oop North" to shoot it, his name's Marcus Iddon, a really nice guy and a first class tarp shooter to boot. This young lad with a 682 Gold E shot very well, note the classic concentration whilst waiting to shoot, like every tarp shooter, very mechanical & precise. Here's a pic of my good friend ****** *****, on the left, she's originally from Bradford (I think), but now sensibly lives "darn sarf", and is the current Regional Director for the South East Region. She normally runs a mile when she sees me as she knows I'm going to have a pop at her over the current state of the CPSA. We all had a really great time, here's a pic of the winner, (Malcolm Grant), who shot a stunning 20 ex 20, well done that man. I think the young lad shot a 19, then there was a couple of 18's, then me on a 17 , ah well, as MC would say, "It's only a game..!!". Cat. The prize, well... erm. What was second place? A box of ferrero rocher?
beretta
its a good bit of fun for a change is zz but not for the faint of wallet did well cat considering your choke choice. those trappies would not like you winning shooting 1/4 cho B) ke. Catamong
I should have mentioned there was a £100 High Gun prize, with £40, £30, £20 to follow, plus a nice selection of "Costco" prices. ZZ shooting can be a real lottery, sometimes the birds just float straight up in the air and hover directly over the trap, saying "shoot me, shoot me..!!", others come out edge on at ground level and zip across like real grasscutters behind the other trap boxes. You do get two shots at eyery target so my game plan is to get the first one off as soon as I am on the target, with the second barrel held "in reserve". During the practice session, (£2 a target - I didn't have many ) I called for a target and as I didn't see it appear I opened the gun, assuming it was a "no bird", only to see it then floating away into the distance, it had come out very low directly behind the trap house and I hadn't picked it up, a valuable lesson learned, in this game don't open the gun until the ref calls a "no bird" If you're a half sensible Pigeon shooter you'll have no trouble with these targets, it's just the odd one or two that are a bit tricky. Peter De La Mare
If you're a half sensible Pigeon shooter you'll have no trouble with these targets, it's just the odd one or two that are a bit tricky. I did wonder that, having seen a little ZZ being shot at A1 and on the net. Begs the question though, with all the scores reading like skeet and trap scores, ie all straights or virtual straight, just what is the lure for the sporting shot? Isn't it just a mega expensive version of trap for those who simply can't bear to miss?
Catamong
It can get very tricky when the wind blows, on Saturday we were lucky, it was a light breeze more or less straight in the face, ideal conditions. Last year was different, there was a strong wind from behind, many targets were hit and fell outside of the ring, I tied for High Gun with 16 ex 20. lister1
why is it so expensive? if the birds are reuseable then i can see how they can charge a golden nugget a bird.
fuzrat
Lister, only the white centre bit can really be used as it is hard plastic. The orange "wings" get busted up pretty good, granted a few that are missed or only have one or two pellet holes in are reused but a lot of people blast them with their second shot even if they "kill" it with their first for practice. I suppose another reason its quite expensive is there are only about 4 grounds in the uk that have whirly-gig setups and they have to get their outlay back somehow as not that many shoot it this side of the channel. Quite popular in europe though. I shot it in the summer at A1 and I believe it was £30 birds only and £50 competition so £20 quid each in the prize pot. If you are any good at it there is some good prize money to be had. I think 3rd payed out £100 in the summer so out of 20 odd entrants you get the same payout as most sporting high gun prizes Fuzrat
lister1
i suppose the more people who shoot it the cheaper it will get. looks good. i may splash out and have a go soon.
Catamong
The set up is meant to simulate live pigeon shooting, with birds being released randomly from 5 "traps" in front of the shooter. Most European Countries have now banned live Pigeon "trap" Shooting, this is the closest thing to it for most European shooters. Cat. Peter De La Mare
I really hope you enjoy it!! For £50 I'd much rather have 200 birds at one of the large sporting grounds such at Fennes etc.
