Catamong
Garyb and I made an early start on a field of rape today, the farmer said they'd been feeding hard on a particular spot all week, I recce'd the field yesterday, and sure enough, there were quite a few birds there. I've known the Farmer and the local Keeper for many years and I've got pretty exclusive access to some parts of his farm, so they've not been overshot, and I knew they'd decoy well. I put a banger rope out at the other end of the field to prevent them from settling there, we got set up and in position by about 7.45, with 2 rotary's and 20 full bodied deeks. No sooner had we got set up then the low cloud descended with a bit of drizzle to boot, not good conditions for shooting, but we stuck it out and the odd one or two were trickling in. We also had some mega flocks drop in from time to time, the hide wasn't in the ideal spot and they were coming in behind us from the left hand side, which made for some pretty awkward shooting. We packed up at 1.00, and we picked up 41 birds, so hardly a red letter day, but some good sport nevertheless. Garyb brought his new dog along, he made some lovely retrieves, but he's still very young and eager, here they both are: I predicted way back in September that this years shooting over rape would be a struggle in our area due to so many acorns and berries, and that's certainly proved to be the case, you've really got to work hard to get a decent bag, we would have had more with a bit more wind and less mist and drizzle, but, hey ho, that's life..!! Catamong
Where were you shooting? We were shooting just South of Luton, near the M1, and there was hardly a breath of wind, just awful low cloud and drizzle. But, as others have said, it's better than sitting in doors, and I did get a triple with the Benelli out of one flock that came in, it's nice when that happens. Gazza took out some really long birds with the 20, (the dog was very impressed..!!) Cat.
