Cranfield
I have caught some nice mullet in the harbour/marinas on bread (I took a small telescopic fly rod), but I have never seen anyone "proper" beach fishing. I doubt most tourists would take that amount of gear on the plane, so that could be the reason. I would mention that its just over 1000 miles from the Gambia to the Canaries. Have a great time. ollie
2 summers ago the missus at the time treated me to Marlin fishing trip in Lanzarote while we were there on holidays. It was an awful day, the skipper was a complete ****** and when it was obvious we weren't going to catch any marlin he wouldn't even let us try to catch anything a bit smaller. The marina where we got on the boat was full of big Mullet though (made me wish I hada stayed there and fished for them all day).
Spaniel
I have dangled a line while sat on the harbour wall, and we caught all these different colour fish, only small ones but lovely to look at, im guessing they were some sort of wrasse. Watched some locals throwing bags of bait into the water, not sure what it was or what they were fishing for at the time, but seem to remember alot of guys were using bread so im guessing they were after the mullet. But sunshine and fishing just goes together
Raja Clavata
Yep, booked a bottom fishing day out a few years back - ended up sport fishing with lures (when I knew it was a complete waste of time). They spent 90 minutes trying to get an anchor in and gave up in the end. You have to be careful about making such bookings! Dunno about the beach fishing - give it a go and post a report!! MM
just find a local rock mark, and downsize. lots of good fishing to be had when you just go around the corner away from the tourists.
christy
If you can use/have got a fly rod why not try that. Most travel rods pack up small and all you really need is a small box of bugs, spare line and a net. I would go for a flashy 1"-2" lure. God knows what will turn up but for sure something will. CharlieT
I've had a house by the sea in the south of the island for 25 or so years. Best success I have off the rocks is using live bait or sometimes prawns, caught a fairly decent Barracuda once. Most fun though is bread floated on top. Last hour before sunset is the best time. Catch your livebait with bread or preferably small prawns and away you go.

Is that Ship Wreck still around, 27,500 tons usually takes a year or two to rot away, I used to work on that ship back in the 70's, It was called the SS Italis then, leased to Chandris..... I haven't been across from Playa Blanca to Fuerteventura for oh, must be 5 years. Last time I went the bow was still visible above the water. When she broke up it caused much excitement and jabbering amongst the locals on Lanzarote. Only trouble was my Spanish not being good enough to understand excited animated talk of shipwrecks. I believe a considerable amount is still intact below the water, as you say it takes a long time for such a ship to rust away. What would it be, I suppose about 15 years ago since she broke up. I think you are close, perhaps 12 or 14, I really can't remember, I understand it was being towed somewhere and broke free, was certainly some sight first off!! It was a tub when I was on it, built in the 1940's I recall and made a bit of a reputation for itself, The Americanis or something like that it was originally called, turned into a gambling ship, then chartered and used for the Australia runs..SS Australis (I think) mothballed for a while and bought out of retirement by Chandris for some cruising around the Med..The Italis, 11 decks, about 2000 passengers and 1500 staff and crew, oh yes, and somewhere along the line they cut off one of it's funnels I got on it just after it had been moored up in Monrovia and used for some major Commonwealth conference..it was still full of stowaway prostitutes when I got on it in Spain! We kept putting them ashore at port after port for a good two weeks (I think some of the crew were happy to keep them on board ) Anyway...I hear wreck fishing can be good Edited March 16, 2010 by Dekers
