gixer1
because I wanted one. Are you all happy now? That's the way! man-up and just say you wanted a toy! in this political climate even the shooting crown are ashamed to say it sometimes! if i could have a howitzer...i'd buy one ....oh, but only for making duck ponds.... Dunkield
This has PW Gold thread written all over it, keep it up As gixer says just be honest, people will respect you for it. Just say "I wanted a big toy, just because I can I can have one, I will probably never use it [like the .375], but the chicks down the pub and some people on the internet will be well impressed with the size of my weapon"

CharlieT
No matter how hard I massage my 6.5 (like others on here I could mention) it will never grow into a .338 like njc's, so I for one will never impress the girls !!!!!!

new to the flock
Do you think that it may upset him to know that Mrs. Sweepy was firing a .50 cal last weekend.
njc110381
How can you say I never used the .375? I shot a Deer and a Squirrel with that rifle! It's a tough one in the UK isn't it. I got the .338 because I wanted the biggest I could have but you have to be careful to justify it too. In fact justifying it comes quite high on the list of things to do here as without that, you aint getting one! So I need it. Really, I do! I couldn't keep the .375H&H so got the next best thing. There's no doubt about it if I could have found a Red Deer permission and kept the .375 I doubt I ever would have sold it. I really had a soft spot for that gun. I'll probably shoot a few Deer with the .338, decide it recoils too hard and costs too much to feed and swap it for a .243! I am a bit of a collector of guns so at some point I'll want something new and the size of the cabinet forces another guns sale. This time around it's the 6.5x55. I can always buy another if I decide I miss it.

njc110381
I think the 6.5 is quite well suited to use in the UK. Meat damage isn't bad at all, it's very gentle and fires bullets heavy enough to get an exit on large Reds. What more could you want from a general purpose stalking rifle? njc110381
Probably similar to the .22lr and Deer. It will work, but you wouldn't want to try it!
Paddy Galore!
So which make and model were you thinking of getting then? we will expect pictures...
njc110381
I've just ordered one of these... http://www.ruger.com/products/m77HawkeyeStandard/models.html It's nice and heavy and has controlled round feed. It looks ok too so I recon it'll do! I didn't want to spend too much on a rifle that could be a nightmare to shift if I decide to sell it. .338s aren't all that common here as people generally either go for a .300 Win Mag or .375H&H+ for big game. They've got good reviews in the states. I always thought Rugers had accuracy issues but it turns out they made a bad batch some years ago and they've held the reputation. The newer guns are supposedly much better.
Tiff-TRG
Well done on getting your .338, good to see they saw reason. Not sure if your already reloading for it, but English Country Pursuits has a load of VERY cheap .338 WinMag factory ammo in. Their website is still being developed, but should work: http://ecp.toucanmedia.co.uk/contact-us Contact no. is 01822 618318 The previous shop owner brought it in for me while I was getting dies sorted.....but I shoot the LapMag, so it's just sat on his shelves with no chance of it moving! He'll probably sell it cheap enough, to still make it under 1/2 RRP even after paying for the TNT to your RFD! njc110381
Tiff, thanks very much for that! I'll get onto him and see what's available. The .338WM isn't that cheap to load for so buying cheap ammo would be a good way to get cases if the ammo is a decent make. It will do us both a favour. I'd imagine ammo is like rocking horse poo, as are customers wanting to buy it! I'll let him know that you sent me his way too
SSS
Interesting thread this one. I ddn't think we could get calibres that big in england for deer, how wrong was I I want one now, but I have no deer stalking permission, do you think Staffordshire FLD will grant one for fox? njc110381
You need to go abroad. That opens up all sorts of options that you wouldn't otherwise have. It's not just a sport for the rich, I'm not that well off but still managed it (just). Next time you want to go on holiday bokk the mrs into a nice health spa and spend the days hunting while she gets pampered!
