Joe99
Hi all, I need a recommendation for a good fox cartridge. Fox will be taken at no more than 30 yards. Its got to be 2 3/4" 12bore, non-steel and be legal for section 2. What should I be going for?
Dekers
BB probably, but many will suggest a rifle is better!
Guest cookoff013
42g BB or #
SSS
Use the search facility, this has been well covered. I use 36 gram 1's and 36 gram 4's. 6's will do the job if your close enough
EMcC
Another vote for BB. When I ran a shoot, at the start of the day, I used to give all the guns a couple of BBs and told them they were for fox and not to use the normal bird shot they were using for Pheasant. I used to buy a slab of Three Crowns but as the price went up I bought Baikel and they never let a fox through the line.
henry d
Hi all, I need a recommendation for a good fox cartridge........What should I be going for? Is it just for foxing ? or just something to be in your pocket when at a peg ? What choke ? Thick cover or open land ? Are there hounds or beaters/walking guns involved ? njc110381
Really any bore will do. You need to use fairly large shot, no bigger than #4 and ideally a bit bigger (I use BB). Use the heaviest load your gun will fire. The slacker the choke or the smaller the bore, the less pellets you will get in your target zone. Reduce the ranges accordingly. As far as I can remember I have only ever used a 12g or rifle for Fox. I've never shot out past 20 yards with the 12g, mainly because I'm not confident of my shot past that range! Sprags
Before getting into centrefire rifles I used to shoot many a fox with 42g BB's, it was an old wildfowling load and certainly stopped charlie with authority!

al4x
at 30 yards most will do, I've shot foxes with most from 7's through to 3's. Don't be too tempted to go too large you loose the pattern and number of pellets. Most of mine are driven either on game or vermin days and if close I just use what is in the gun
racingfrank7
There is some shells that york guns do that are ment for foxs and they are double wad so they stay together and act as a slug but there not, we was talking about them when i was in there and apprently they are mental when you pattern them on card ect ect. Evil Elvis
As alex said, many foxes get shot on driven days and get 32-34g of no 5 or 6 shot.Very effective, I asked the very same question when I started shooting foxes, I used 42b of bb's very effectivley. However while on game drives and rough shooting and even while decoying i have shot many foxes using 32g no 6, I do however use tight chokes full or extra full when game shooting.
