24 hour session stalking and Pigeon bashing

Hiya,

I headed up to my mates ground just south of Perth on Tuesday night, on the way up I had to go visit a local farm that was having Pigeon probs in his sheds. With the permission secured Norrie and myself made a start on the problem by poping off 3 ferals and a jackdaw before I had to leave. I arrived up at Johns house at 9.30 and we quickly got setup for an evening stalk and set off with his .222 to try and find me my first Roe buck. It didn't take too long for John to spot a nice buck at the far edge of the field just on the tree line and the challenge of getting close enough started and it was quite open ground. After what seemed like ages we were finally in position about 90 yrds from him and as soon as he presented himself I took the shot.

We decided to have another go first thing in the morning to see if we could get another so we headed out at 5am, we covered most of the ground before we found 2 does in a field so we hung about for a whole to see if there was a buck nearby. Sure enough after a short while he appeared about 300 yrds from us and started slowly making his way across the field directly toward us. At about 60 yrds he turned and presented the shot, scratch my second buck :hmm:

I spent the rest of the day on the pigeons that were hammering a Pea field, now I've only been using a shotty for 3 months now so am still learning but wow what a session. I collected 78 and lost probably half a dozen in cover plus I got a bonus Rook all for 116 cartridges :hmm:

Hiya,

Thanks guys

I forgot to add that was only my third & fourth shot with the .222, as the first two shots produced a fox and a Doe earlier in the year I still have a 100% kill rate with it... I wonder how long i can keep that up

Hiya,

Your lucky up there in bonnie Scotland Davy,as we can't use less than .243 for Roe deer down here!

To be honest I think I would prefer to hit them with a bit more clout, even doing massive damage in the engine room to all three Roe I've had, they have ran at least 40 yrds before dropping. The last buck probably did a good 50 yrds yet the shot had went through the top of the heart at the valve @ about 60 yrds range.

If you are confident with the rifle, have you thought about taking some head shots?

I know there are some that are against this, but I prefer it, I have always found deer shot behind the ear drop like a stone every time

Hiya, The pics look much better than the ones you texted me...:D...crackin looking deer ...:(...Still got my leg of venison in the car then... You must have forgotten to drop it off...:hmm:

BTW, Billy says, even with his .308, the deer sometimes still ran.... that must be like hitting them with an RPG too...:)
