natcot
Just wondering how many members regularly go out shooting on their own, particularly lamping? For one reason or another, ie, 3 on a quad bike doesn't work, I have parenting duties to sort so can't always get out early or camp through the night etc etc I'm slowly being squeezed out, nothing major, just one of those things. I'm fortunate enough to have a couple of small permissions that I can shoot on my own if need be. Thing is, I enjoy the company of shooting with friends and will continue to get out with them but to be able to keep shooting regularly I'll have to get out on my own. I'd be interested in any thoughts on safety, logistics (carrying all equipment plus kills etc), boredom perhaps, any other problems faced due to be on your own or even plus factors Cheers
ST3V3
I quite often go out shooting on my own as its normally a spur of the moment thing that envolves the rimmy and a walk the peace and quite is nice. when it is planned ahead then theres 2 of us someone needs to carry all the kit
Paddy Galore!
I prefer shooting on my own, deffo enjoy the peace & quiet. I find that if i take one of my mates along then it gets rushed. if i get bored or am just waiting for rabbits then i've got a dvd player in the motor either that or just watching the wildlife, spent over an hour last week just watching a barn owl. mick miller
More often than not I go alone lamping, the only downside is having to use a scope mounted lamp, which means not chambering a round until you see a rabbit. Sometimes cycling the bolt sounds like a clanging dustbin lid in the still of the night and sends the rabbits scarpering, other times it works in your favour as they sit up to see what all the noise was. The plus side is you can be as stealthy as you like and take your time. I only team up if we go in vehicles, one person driving & lamping the other on the back with the rifles or if I'm being mentored with the deer shooting. Guest topshot_2k
i like going for a walk alone, usually with the rifle or just walk the hedges/woods up with the shotgun. But then going duck/pigeon shooting or squirrel shooting in the woods is great fun with a couple of people.
Dekers
Common to go by myself, all depends on each situation!
magman
Lamping = the less the better unless they no what there doing
Bluebarrels
Shooting by yourself has its advantages twice as many shots BB
natcot
Thanks for the comments guys, seems many of you enjoy the peace and quite of getting out alone. I guess it would help me work on my field craft. Whenever I shoot with mates we can't help but chatter and laugh and ultimately miss out on many shoots! GRAM71, I like the idea of taking a DVD player along, but sadly I walk all my permissions!
ziplex
Don't lamp much atall but more often than not it's just me and a mutt on the foreshore during the wildfowling season, suprising what good company a dog can be, especially when you're both seeking the same result
Bleeh
During my ferreting season it's pretty impractical to go by yourself, but I often go pigeon shooting / stalking as one, but occasionly I'll invite out a second party if I'm bored. TJ91
i always find i concentrate better on my own and hit more birds. but i do like the company sometimes.
leonp9lbw
I quite enjoy shooting on my own, as I work shifts. Just me and my dog a flask of coffee and some fresh air. What can be better.
natcot
Having given this some thought, I'm now quite keen to get out on my own. I'm relatively new to shooting (3 years) and have always shoot with a friend, mostly for good company but also for mentoring purposes and also because they've got all the equipment. I've got pretty much everything now plus I reckon I could take one of my labradors for company, neither make great retrievers, hence why I've never taken them before (wouldn't want to ruin an evenings shoot) but they would love it and if it's a write off then at least they've had a good walk an it's only my time wasted!! Might have to invest in a lithium battery though as having to carry rifle, lamp, battery and hopefully bunnies might be a bit of a challenge! silver pigeon 3
I really enjoy going on my own, i find its about the only time when i can shut off from work etc. But i do enjoy it when my 8 year old lad comes with me, as he enjoys the time we get together. Also it amazing what you re-learn when you take your children with you as they keep on asking questions about why/what/where etc, normally about stuff you normally do without thinking about and haven't bothered to experiment or change in years. And it brings on the next generation for the future of our sport.
Graham M
Took my 11year old grandson with me earlier this year……… Might just as well have taken a marching brass band complete with fireworks and dancing girls.. Needless to say I didn’t shoot anything G.M.

GRAM71, I like the idea of taking a DVD player along, but sadly I walk all my permissions! VERY true normally. twice the footfall, twice the smell, and half the concentration. You have to weigh up each situation, commonly job work is ONE, the rare second is there for H&S or a big problem! "Generally" two is "sport" and "fun"
bigstevouk
Nearly always have me best mate/shooting bud when out, we work as a good team but then again we've been friends and pest controllers for years .......i think every one has there own way of doing stuff , so whatever suits you i guess, good luck for the future
Evil Elvis
Ultimately, i see and shoot a lot more if im on my own....no temptation to talk to your mates and and you concentrate more. Plus Raja and Bionicle sound like small elephants when they walk.................................... ..
