Yep, that a male Yellowhammer

Males are unmistakeable with a bright yellow head and underparts, brown back streaked with black, and chestnut rump. In flight it shows white outer tail feathers. Often seen perched on top of a hedge or bush, singing. Its recent population decline make it a Red List species. From RSPB site.

Never seen one up my way.

Nice to see a cock bird in such good nick.

When I was a lad growing up in 60.s & early 70,s there were hundreds of them in the hedgerows around here. They would join forces with Sparrows, Green finches, Corn Buntings and Thousands and Thousands of Chaffinches and hit the stubble fields big time in winter.

The male has a distinctive territorial song which country folk will tell you sounds like the bird is singing... " Little bit of bread and no cheese "

Honest ! I know ive had a few but i couldnt possibly make that up !
