Jim Sarakun Posted September 16, 2010 Report Share Posted September 16, 2010 As you addicted PW. members know, I have a Series IIA Landrover, that I just would not part with, not even for an hour in a broken lift with Kylie Minogue. I tried to upload a picture of this beautiful vehicle for you, but kept getting, Upload failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file. Pictures of my super Landy must now be censored it would seem. I can't remember if I told you this before, so if I have, revel in another super read, or skip it and go and polish your rice burner.. I did a search but can't find it, and my memory has faded a tad, but the facts are still pretty much the same. I have had my Series for about 20 odd years now. I use it mostly for shooting, the kids, they love the top down in summer, and the big shop now and again. It goes where ever I point it, though I do drive carefully, as I do not wish to break it. It has only ever cost me for the usual running stuff, brakes ignition and so on. I must confess though, I have in all those years, been stuck twice. SHOCK HORROR! I once drove through an unknown puddle, showing off, with the kids in the back. It was 8ft. deep at the deep end, so I was later told, and the water flooded in, the engine cut out, and we scrambled onto the bonnet. The water came to just below the steering wheel. A big John Deer came and pulled us out. The farmer was great about it, and it gave him a chance to divulge the stupid things he used to do in an old Series. See, lots of people have a soft spot for them. Another time, a mate in his Lightweight was leading on an expedition down a shallow river, local to us. Just me and him, though we do have a lot of Land/Range Rover owners in the street. It was a Sunday and he drove onto the damp, but no water on it, flood plain. The Lightweight went across it fine, but my poor heavy LWB, got stuck, down to the axles. We walked back to the village, about 10 minutes across the fields, and knocked up my neighbour, an antique tractor enthusiast. We trundled down to the flood plain on his little grey tractor, where trying to pull us out, as my mate got stuck trying to pull me out, he got stuck. So back to the village, guy up the street, a Classic Range Rover owner, gosh, how he took the mike, his Rangey would sort it. Well he got stuck. My, how WE took the mike. So, back to the village, a LWB full of paving slabs this time, that should give it some grip said the proud owner. He only just made it onto the plain, before he got stuck. The road running along the side of this plain, was by now full of parked cars and people cheering. It was turning out to be quite an afternoons event. Well, now the Farmer came out, to see what all the commotion was on his flood plain. He really tore into us about trespass but we were all laughing so much and the crowd were cheering and shouting for him not to be such a kill joy, he eventually got into the spirit and went to get his tractor. It was a dinky tractor as far as tractors go, but bigger than the one that was already stuck, but alas, it too joined the melee, and also got stuck. The crowd were now at fever pitch, someone bought some sandwiches for us and a really nice Gentleman bought out some beers. He actually knew the farmer, and congratulated him for letting us off road in his field.. Blimey, did we laugh, if only he knew.. So everyone was having a good time, now isn't it strange how a miss demeanour can turn out this way... The Farmer, now joined by his 2 sons, said he knew how to move things, he was going to get Bess. We thought Bess was going to be a horse. Bess was one of those huge John Deers, with all four wheels as tall as a man. Bess made the job look like a Sunday jaunt, which I suppose, for all those gathered, and for us too, it was. So, a super entertaining day out in the country for a lot of people, and all for free. We still talk about it to this day.. The Farmer is now a good friend, as are his sons, though he does insist we ask him before we trespass, so he can advise where the ground isn't too soft.. Bless..
