Gonna Shoot a Wabbit

Hi all.

well i am braving the frozen wastes in pursuit of pigeons today. i arrived at the designated frozen field of rape for 0800hrs. it is not politic to start banging away too early here as the farmers house is only a couple of hundred yards away.

There were a few birds in the trees when i arrived that i walked off and quickly set the hide up. The background is a little thin but this is the best spot so fingers crossed all will be well. The decoys go out and i settle down to await the birds return.

It is not long before the birds make an appearance and ignore the decoys and settle some 200yds up the field. D'oh!! a shot into the air lifts them and lo and behold 6 birds break away from the flock. 5 jinked at the decoy pattern but 1 came too close and fell to a shot from some 35yds out. HHMMMMMM change the pattern from "U" shape to dead eye duck special........ completely random to look like a wild flock but with a good 5yds between 'em. It shouldnt work but with twitchy birds that have been shot at for at least a month it usually works. Yes indeedy the next bird pitches straight in with no hesitation WooHOO :good: .

China is doing her usual vocalising with every shot as the birds come in groups of 20-50 that i try to leave. Do not be fooled by the innocent expression behind that look lurks the intellect of a blonde maniac

There are stragglers following the main group i am trying to concentrate on and a steady flightline of birds is coming to the decoys and i have some 6-8 birds down and nip out for a quick tidy up as 2 birds are upside down.

The birds are decoying well as i knock down another bird and as it twitches its last From nowhere a buzzard pounces on it grabs it in its talons and is off away  Cheeky sod!

Another few birds are added to the bag and as i lose feeling in my feet from the cold a cloud comes over us and it begins to snow. The birds have found somewhere else to feed and when i havent seen anything for 30 mins i called a halt at 1100hrs. The blonde maniac was out of the hide in an instant and was picking birds like a good 'un

with the slain gathered and blonde loony still.

under the conditions i am happy to bag a modest 12.

All the best for xmas everyone and thanks for reading.
