camokid
hi all went out yesterday to a nice little wooded area where the muntjak sometimes play ball and step out into the field luckly enough a nice buck and doe popped out first shot dropped the buck on the spot and the second shot dropped the doe 50 yards further on. i wanted to get some help with the buck i dont no what to do next i have had a go at the measuring and have scored a 59 but my missis had a go and scored a 63 so not sure. question is what now?? how do i get it measured properly ?? would it be worth stuffing?? Dunkield
Nice head well done. You can get is measured by CIC or BASC. CIC charge £15 to do it and £15 if it is a medal (and you want a medal) Not sure if BASC charge anything to members. Anyhoo CIC are here: http://www.cictrophy.com/ BASC are here: http://www.basc.org.uk/en/departments/deer-management/ Only you can decide if it is worth having mounted, should cost about £250 or so. camokid
cool so how do i get it to them i take it i should boil it out then post it?
Dunkield
Give them a call and ask, I got mine mounted then measured after. The only problem you have is if you invest money in it, and then go and shoot a better one
wboulter
take the head to the taxidermist ask him to skin the head so its done tidy but send the skull off thats the way i done my silver medal looks like a cracking head

camokid
just had a chat with a local taxidermist he says to prep the skull im talking £40 and to have a full mount he wants £110 dont sound to bad to me :good:
cooter
I skin them off, then put them in enough water/bleach mix to sit just below the pedicles and boil for about 45 mins. Check the water often and top up if required. When it all looks well cooked, remove from the water, and use a pressure wash to remove what I can, then back in for another boil to remove what ever is left. Another pressure wash and you should be good to go. HTH Cooter

foxbasher
hi mate, nice munty there. when ive prepared a few mounts i bleach the skull with hydrogen peroxide. it brings the skull out very bright, to add colour to the antlers you can mix potassium permanganate with a bit of water and use it to touch in a bit more colour. when mixed with water its bright purple but soaks in and dried brown. try getting hold of some and give it a practice go on a spare mount to see what you think before using it on a trophy head though. steve. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potassium_permanganate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_peroxide

gsm1968
so it looks like il skin the head - then send it. i have skined and boiled out a couple now but i tend to lose the dark markins in the antlers any tips ?? i use a baby nappy boiler type of thing the big silver ones Prepare the skull as normal and just keep it, then if you want to have it mounted later you can. As said if you mount it and then shoot a better one you will kick yourself. however it remains your first good one. If you want to have it mounted later, just shoot one with a nice cape(skin for shoulder mount) and prep that cape well.Send the lot off and the taxidermist will sort it for you. Basicaly build one from two The pic. you have posted looks like you have cut through the neck and a nice shoulder mount requires the skin to be removed from behind the shoulders. The more skin you send to the taxidermist the better,He can trim it. The skin should be removed according to how you want it mounted, ie: looking left/right etc. Either way, nice shooting. Top job. Beardo
cracking looking head there - really nice girth on the antlers.
camokid
the girth at mid point on both antlers was 6 cm not a bad size. if only the other tine was the same size think then it would hit gold but im thinking silver still pleased
