Piebob
I want one! Well, once the Lionhounds and staffs have 'passed on'! No point - it'll just get shot when someone else believes they have seen yet another "big cat" "roaming" the countryside (no more than a 100m or so from the nearest houses). Vince Green
spoke to feo he said i can't leagally shoot it unlees i get it put on my fac,in which case he'd have to speak to land owner about loosing sheep. Said had similar enquiry this week for same reason Feral cats are general vermin, it doesn't say what type of cat. Why do these FEOs have to make things more complicated? to boost their own self importance thats why.
gsm1968
the hint is a Leopard cat its close to a bengal so about the same size or slightly larger than your usual commonal garden moggy. Not what I'd class as a big cat and I would guess he shot someones treasured pet My mistake, I read it as a leopard size cat!! I've been reading all the "BIG CAT" threads, thinking of proper big cats. They're all about domestic size cats!
al4x
My mistake, I read it as a leopard size cat!! I've been reading all the "BIG CAT" threads, thinking of proper big cats. They're all about domestic size cats!  exactly you get the ones where light is deceptive, we had one locally where the pub landlord swore he saw one opposite the pub, just about last light. It was a big moggy as it ventured near a mate on a high seat shortly afterwards. Then you get the bengal type domestic cat which if you have really bad eyesight looks like a leopard. The fundamentals are if proper big cats existed you would know about them on this little island and you wouldn't have such a diverse range of them as it would appear we have from the reports. I have seen a lynx out in the uk but it was shortly after herded back to its pen but they are smaller than lab size so really not much bigger than a domestic one. The case above highlights how likely you will be to shoot someones pet so if you do shoot a tiger and when you get up close its a bengal etc best option is bury it well :yp:

PhilG
ive got a ' shoot animals for the protection of humans and other animals' condition on all my rifles and vermin on them all too. failing that then 3 50g loads of bbs in quick succesion would do it at close range. i dont know what the police would say though Nathan, Thats a generic condition that applies to expanding ammunition only. None of your rifles are specifically conditioned. To kill a big cat you would potentially be breaking the conditions of your FAC.

Not what I'd class as a big cat and I would guess he shot someones treasured pet they look like this, so definitley best the picture isn't publicised i would skin that baby and have it on the wall.. to be honest if i or many other people say a "big cat" that was clearly not a moggy i would shoot it without thinking too long about it if it was 30m away i would shoot it for shure! infact the thing i would be thinking about the longest is where to shoot it! Deerstalkerlunt
Shoot it! Protection of livestock it would come under as, plus its not a native species and its not on any protection list here, as it apparently doesnt exist! I was sceptical, but a few year back when I first got my fac I was out lamping with my .22 and I heard a lot of noise coming from a bracken covered slope, I put the lamp over to it and saw a great dane size black figure but no eyes, I didnt shoot at it as I wasnt sure what it was (as I know the farmer has a small pack of GSP's that are quite large and always roaming about), but it did slink off in a weird manner. But if I ever went lamping there again with .243 or .308 and I saw it I would shoot it, as I have " the shooting of animals for the protection of other animals or humans." But even though I saw this black figure and never really knowing what it was, I am very sceptical they exist. But recently a shoot I help keeper on, the farmer has lost several sheep and have been completely eaten or had there throats ripped out! We have shot a large fox up there but I dont think this was a fox, but If I see one I am going to shoot it. I always carry some 50g BB's with me when out shooting pigeons incase of a fox so Id even use them if it came close enough. Although I would rather be sat in a truck with my .243 or .308, can always wind up the windows if it doesnt go to plan Edited February 13, 2011 by Deerstalkerlunt
Dustem Dave
Just been looking at fieldsports channel where they were trying to find a big cat in west wales, they didn,t find one but there is some footage on there taken by a policeman on his mobile of one on a railwayline

rabbit.slayer.no.1
we can all sit here and say he did or didnt see a so called big cat, i think we should hold are views till he can prove it with a pic , you ask can i kill it i say kill it and find out . if something that big is hunting sheep and goats it will not belong before its on the farm taking the farmers dog or children so next time you see it put a hole in it . Vince Green
I really don't think that if, in the unlikely event, that you actually shot a really big cat anyone is going to say anything to you along the lines of "you didn't have panthers on your FAC" are they? They are just going to say well done. It would be a travisty if they did try to screw you for it.
Piebob
but there is some footage on there taken by a policeman on his mobile of one on a railwayline I recall seeing that footage reported in the news at the time. I'm no cat expert by any means but even I could tell that it was definitely a moggy. The scale alone gave it away, never mind the way it walked, size of it's tail and the way it held it. Granted, big and fat. But definitely a moggy.

Piebob
I see in the off topic catorgary someone else has seen a big cat in west wales Yep, and surprise surpise it was what colour? Just yet another cat "sighting" with no photos or video or dead thing(s) to back it up. Why aren't the UK trees riddled with animal carcases with all these big cats roaming around? Has anyone come across this, ever?
