person22
Got this big black one on a maize field earlier, went to fire a few shots into the air to scare them off and this one flew close enough, might make a hide in the ditch tomorrow, should get a few. Highlander
Yep that's a rook. Don't worry mate you're not alone on here there's plenty that wouldn't know the difference BUT should. It's in the bald base to the beak and the fact that if there's more than one or two (sometimes a few more if they're a family group) they'll be rooks not crows. The bald beak can be seen in flight quite easily unless they've been stickin' it in a dung heap  Rooks don't do half the crop damage they're credited with in fact they eat a lot of soil pests and bugs so aren't really the bad boys and they certainly aren't predatory like crows. Crows'll eat eggs, chicks and young of pretty much every other bird so good to shoot them.
person22
ha ha yeah i just came on here to edit it cause my dad said its a rook not a crow !!! you live and learn Edited March 16, 2006 by person22
Dead-Eyed Duck
Spot on Highlander If you see a flock of crows, then they're rooks. And that there lone rook is nearly always a crow, or a rook with BO. Don

Dead-Eyed Duck
Sorry pavman, but Highlander comes across in writing as an entirely reasonable, well educated, deep thinker to me. Are you saying that he ain't like this? Come on - dish the dirt so that we can all beware in future? Don
