sako751sg
Hardly been out with too much work but started holidays last Thursday.Took Mac and Rab and went to the MILs a couple of hours before dark.As soon as we got down to the house we saw 4 roe in her bottom park.Expecting hopefully to see a buck in among them,we glassed and was shocked to see all 4 were bucks,3 in velvet and 1 clean.I got the rifle out and lay down and ranged them all about the 220 yards mark,so adjusted the Nightforce and took the clean buck when he presented a safe and broadside shot.He went straight down so i put another up the spoot but the rest legged it.We waited 5 mins and then walked down and dragged him back to within 60 yards from the hoose where i gralloched him and put his puds out for the fox and took a couple of pics.I had just taken the gloves off from gralloching, when i saw the 3 bucks had came out and were grazing in the same place so i took the rifle and walked the 60 yards away from them to get on higher ground to make the shot safe. They were all yearlings so i took one and that ran about 20 yards and then collapsed and i let the other two go on their way.The bigger buck weighed 16 1/2kg and the wee one 11.A nice looking 6 pointer but on the light side. Also went out this morning and drove about 25 miles which covers about 2000 acres.Had seen a few bucks but nothing shootable when i saw one i had noticed twice before and thought he looked a cracking thick heed but had never got close enough to make sure and he was always flighty. The stalk was only about 200 yards and pretty straight forward as i was on high ground looking down on him with good cover, but when i put my head up to check him 3 does which were with him had clocked me and legged it.I expected him to leg it on past form but he didnt care one bit and carried on grazing. He was only about 120 yards away so i extended the bipod with having to shoot steep down hill, and sat down and took the shot.Once again he went straight down, and on getting to him the heed was better than i had thought, very thick, even with 7 points and the beast itself huge.Cleaned, head and feet off he weighs 22 1/2kg and the heeds been boiled and cleaned, and weighs 730g but obviously has a lot of drying to do. All in a good start to the bucks although they have been very flighty, mainly i think to the very still mornings just now.The weather has been outstanding and they have fairly been showing but stalking them so far hasnt been that easy, whcih makes it all the better. Also noticed way more clean bucks than usual for this time up here. sako751sg
Cheers all. That's a good start to a holiday. Nice looking bucks and good pics How did you get on the other night? My 600 yard stalk when you texted didint come off.Crawled to within 150 yards and they were gone.Good practice though. Well done. Both good looking heads. Cheers Mark.Have you been out lately and any good heads with you.Loads more clean bucks than usual for this time and a few promising heads still in velvet so unsure of true size yet. It's good to see you, Mac and Rab back in action mate. The one (With the bit of blood on it's left ear) looks like a real cracking head, well done mate! Great to be out again fella.Been way too busy and staying down in Perth now and again with work and maybe going to the Islands today, which isnt good during the holidays. The heads a cracker right enough, not long but thick and should have a very good volume.Unless something dramatic goes wrong its a shoe in gold so a great start. How are you getting on with your own deer?Theres always something to learn with them and even after nearly 300 roe shot they never cease to go against the grain pretty often. fine job buddy nice way to start a holiday when you givin the young un a go not many bucks showing down my way yet plenty time tho Cheers fella. He will get his shot pretty soon hopefully, although everything will have to be spot on obviously.Have you been out in among the roe yourself lately? some good meat there mate well done. love the first pic Mac took the pic and i didnt realise until it was downloaded that the roe could be seen in it.Unbelievable what some of these wee cameras can do. M ROBSON
Hi Dave, I've been out for a couple of stalks with some clients over from Norway last week, they did a couple of days at bucks and Pigeons, both getting a nice mature buck each and their personal bests on the pigeons. One of the bucks was just short of a bronze I'd say. I didn't bump into any of the the bucks I've seen during Feb/Mar while pigeon shooting but the wind was cold in the evenings and we didn't see a lot out. I was kind of worried they hadn't done so well this winter but your heavy buck sure has a good rack on him! Well done again, those kind of bucks don't come around often. Cheers, Mark. Nice to know the cushies are about somewhere in numbers Mark. Not many at all here compared to usual and not many chances of a good bag. I always wonder how the roe will fare after a harsh winter but it shows how resiliant and able to adapt they are when you see the condition they are in.Ive seen a few nice heads, one esp that is still in velvet but its sitting on top of a very young beast so it could be light and better in a year or two.As i mentioned,i have never before seen so many clean heads and maybe thats down to the fine weather for the last 3 weeks or so but i dont know. Hope your season is fruitful anyway,Dave.
