Some will put all variaties bullet on bullet others prefer a particular brand. Mine seems to shoot all ammo pretty much the same so it gives me the luxuray of been able to buy the cheapest!! Dekers
When new my HMR was very ammo fussy, but a few 1000 rounds down the line it handles everything fine, even the 20g stuff. Just the same, my preferred ammo was the Hornady 17g Red ...until the Blue came along... either will do me now!
treetop
its a funny thing... All Hmr Ammo is made in the CCI Factory!!! fact!!! the only diffence is the stamp on the brass and the powder used, as well as the tip.... the difference in tip colours of the hornady was that they made the blue tip for the mach 2 , but never used it... so use it up on the Hmr.. all this said... mine is just as fussy as the rest!! lol.... loves Winchesters... and CCI tnt... 17 grn... the general opinion is that all Hmr rifles, are fussy about the 20grn, until they have fired in excess of 1000 rnds.. my only other advice is zero to 1" high at 100yrds... then your good out to 165 yrds poi.. cheers
Blunderbuss
Phil, I had an extended zero and ammo comparison session a week or so ago using Hornady red and blue tips and Remington premier at 25, 50, 100 and 150 off the bipod and could see no difference between them. Not only was there no discernible difference in group size, the POI was the same - bonus! A better shot than me might have been able to detect a difference but in my rifle they seem pretty interchangeable. BTW Adenborne Fieldsports in Witney are still selling Hornady for £10 a box and Dauntsey Guns near Chippenham are selling Remingtons at £10.76. Last time I asked my 2 nearest shops, Cotswold Shooting in Ciren and Alistair's place in Barnsley were asking £14-£16 a box!

Frenchieboy
My thought my HMR was a little ammo fussy when I first got it but after giving it plenty of time to settle in it is more than happy with Hornady Red or Blue Tips (No difference whatsoever), and I find no difference with Federal Premium V-Shok either - I can change from one to the other (All 17g) without having to re-zero. As for others, I haven't bothered trying them as I can regularly get either of the three that I have mentioned at £10 per box which are more than good enough for what I want cheap enough for me! I've never tried any 20g so I can't comment on them - Maybe it's time I did try them!
gsm1968
Last time I asked my 2 nearest shops, Cotswold Shooting in Ciren and Alistair's place in Barnsley were asking £14-£16 a box! Same price at Coley's. I bought 500 in Helston recently for £82. My HMR shoots all types of ammo with the same results.
deputy dog
Hornady V max for me, haven't tried any thing else through my hummer as she like the diet straight out of the box. And at £100 for 500 i can't complain. But blue Tipped or Red Tipped its only the colour that is the difference between them. I think its a bit fictional that some guns prefer red tip to blue tips. Though a vary in acuracy may occure from 17 grain to 20 grain heads and thats about it. Edited May 1, 2011 by deputy dog

I wouldn't bother, I'm still on my first box and have another couple of half boxes I've been given from disillusioned 20g HMR users, I have yet to find anything they excel at! 17g Ballistic Tips
cooter
This comes up quite a lot, and many people have done their own version of testing with different ammo. The best one I read was comparing the old red tips to the blue tips, using telephone directories, as there was some speculation that the blue tips were not as expansive. The pictures from the test did indeed show that the old red tips expanded better, although the accuracy was no different. Another poster on the same thread quoted a post from a US shooter, who had contacted Hornady about this, and it appeared that there had been a change, and the end result was that the bullets do expand less violently. I guess this could be something to do with the jacket thickness. It will be interesting to see what Hornady do when all the blue tips are used up. activeviii
I have been using remington's since day one but as i was going to reloading solutions yesterday i thought @ £9.50 a box the is would be worth trying the hornady blue tips. i bought 200 so as soon as this wind drop i can go check them out. i have used 20g and have a zero for them but other than that i havent had a need. Someone swearing in here, Coleys, your having a laugh, I'd rather give my wife the money to go buy a new pair of shoes. shouldn't they have a uniform in that place with :yp: as a hat.
