Went out with the usual suspects on Thursday evening with the rifle to try for a buck on a couple of farms, the first being a 7 year old wood that has plenty of Larch that still gets hammered by the bucks.Got to a bit which gives us plenty of scope to sit and watch and there were already 2 does and a nice big 6 pointer but he was over the boundary.Lovely evening and was enjoying the heat when a mature 5 pointer came out about 50 yards away and started grazing away from us.He was working along the fence line and wasnt presenting a side shot so when he was about 100 yards away i stopped him with a whistle and necked him.He dropped on the spot so after 5 minutes a went and dragged him back to the firing point to gralloch. When back i glasssed the other 3 roe and spotted a fox walking through them and heading our way,so stuck one up the spoot and extended the bipod fully for a steep down hill shot.I knew the line she would take as the trail left is battered, and less than a minute later she appeared on it,so i gave a squeaked and broadsided her at 120ish yards. The wind was right for Rab so i lifted him over the rabbit wire and put him out. There was no need to correct him and he went direct to it and took it back.He had to go through a ditch and two fences, and then climb near vertical up 50 yards with it and he was absolutely shattered when he got back.Still had about an hour shooting time so gralloched and went back to the Jeep and moved about 6 miles away where we could still manage a shot if anything out.Luckily 3 does and an old buck were just out so after about 100 yard walk i necked him, once again on a very steep bank at about 80 yards.I think it was Karma after puting Rab for the fox,and one very steep drag back i had him at the top of the bank.A very old beast, with a very thick but short head and 7 points.I had tried to get him all during the rut last year but never seemed as switched on as he was so it was good to get him.The beasts weighed 17 and 18kg and both in cracking condition.

Friday morning headed to the River Don hoping for a Troot or two and arrived just as the sun was coming up at ten to six.Cracking morning with no wind and a wee touch of frost. No rise first thing so worked the worm for an hour but only a few bites with nothing hit.By that time there was a bit of heat and the odd Broonie had started rising so started with the fly rod and a dry Wickhams.Ended up with 8,2 kept and the rest returned with a few others missed and lost. Those that didnt look at the Wickhams were easy to take on a wee Iron Blue Dun so a good first outing with the rods this year.Mac thrashed with the worm for 9 hours without a fish but it doesnt worry him.Its a cracking river for troot and great sport with the fly but a bit early in the season just now.We have have Broonies up to 6 3/4 lb and the amount over 3lb is unbelievable.

Cheers all.

Well done mate, Good shooting and a good read :good: :good: :good:

P.S. Nice pics, and quite a big fox you had there.

Look's like you'r rifle minced him up

Was a biggish vixen and the V-Max usually stops them in their tracks right enough. She was milking and have been back twice but have seen no signs of the den.Sad in a way but thats conservation.

Looks like you've had a cracking few days. The loon is getting good with the camera. Will be his turn to shoot with the riffle soon I guess

Hes getting a grand hand with the camera fella.Hopefully get him on to the big rifle sooner than later.

Nice pictures them, looks a lovely place :good:

Top places indeed, and hardly ever come across other folks which makes it all the better.

Top stuff Dave looks like you have had a couple of gid days out, looks like it was a old dog fox ?

Craken pics as well, the wee man is getting gid wi the camera.

Superb couple of days fella, been way too busy with work and actually was "working" on South Uist during my weeks holidays which wasnt ideal.More drinking than working but i didnt tell the missus.

The fox was a largish vixen and she was pretty old going by the gnashers.

Excellent photos and story. :good:

Its nice to see your Ghillie standing in the water with you. ;)

Cheers fella.Top ghillie and he probably likes the rod as much as the gun.I can leave the fishing bag,net or fish up to a couple of hundred yards away on the bank and put him out for it and he takes them back.To see him get so excited when a fish is hooked is comical.

Dogs are ace so loyal and love everything you throw at them. i think the best pic is where the dog is looking with anticipation at his owner like what you doing? is that for me? what do you want me to do now? please let it be something good.
