EMcC
A total Knee replacement is certainly a major operation and there are alsorts of stories of how they go. Mine isn't so good but then the surgeon had a right mess to play with after Army Doctors had played with it three times before it was finally decided to do the whole lot. It is such a serious operation, so serious the guy in the bed next to me died. He was younger than me but his heart couldn't stand the trauma involved, he died noisily at four minutes past three in the morning of the first day. I heard the Nurses and Doctor fight like hell to hang on to him but finally gave up at four minutes past three. It was six years ago but I can remember it as clear as if it was yesterday. Here's a photo of mine at six months.
kdubya
your right it is a big do, and not fun when it goes wrong, I had to have my intial implants removed after 10 months (it broke you tell me?) this is what I have in now, this one works well but its not without its moments, and as I am still working (till april next year ) I will put up without having my other leg done until I can no longer crawl, I kid you not, deciding to have a replacement is a decision not to be taken lightly. Cranfield
The stomach injection sounds awful, but they just pinch a bit of loose skin (there is usually plenty) and put the needle in that, its about the most painless injection you can have. The warning regarding "emergencies/no bed" is standard stuff , don't let that bother you. Good luck for Monday and I am looking forward to the, "best thing I ever did", posts from you. I was driving within 4 weeks after both my knee Ops, the Physio gave me the nod.

sapper063
hi guys well went into hospital for op mon27th, left ward at 3pm to go to theater ok so far, then to me it started to go downhill, transfering from ward bed to op bed god almighty stomach cramps the one when the muscle just under rib cage goes into hyper drive, lasted about 10 mins very painful. anethetist nearly postponed it, anyway this happened 2 more times then it calmed down, so of into anti chamber for spine injection, problems again as i had previous surgery on back before, it took a few attempts to get through scar tissue, then my legs started to warm up it had worked , great now into op room. lying there while the staff put screens round and a cloth so i couldent see anything, next thing i looks up and sees a leg crikey whose leg is that waving about in the air ,goes quiet for a while, then sounded like someone was using a lump hammer and a drill. thinking when when are they going to start, before i knew it i was in recovery room. ok so far (forgive grammer) I was taken back to hasland ward and i can tell you now they have the best friendliest staff you could wish to meet, bloody fantastic couldent do enough for you. well back to the saga, had a nice cuppa then i got back to the ward about 6pm, laying there pain free magic about 9 they brought meds around and cosultant visited. she spoke to me saying everything went ok, and she had taken loads of **** out or words to that a effect, said i had very hard bones. said when my other knee was ready for doing let her know and she would book an holiday (joking) later that night i started to get cramp in waves from my thigh right through knee into the calf muscle, dont know how long this lasted but i could feel each one start and finish i thought my god how much longer is this going to go on for on and on , must have passed out or been given some meds. when i woke up later i appologised to staff for swearing they said all they could hear was (god almighty here it comes again followed by a scream) well im home a week later monday afternoon feeling not to bad bruising is nice colours but the stockings leave a lot to be desired.(letter on way to makers to see if they can do diff colours) thanks if you have read this so far you very brave. questions 1 what is the **** they take out 2 any you guys had similiar with the cramps well as its 4-40 im going to try to sleep if i can get comfortable any sensible ideas welcome thanks guys

Cranfield
I had a general anesthetic for both of my knees, but the epidural (?) seems to be happening more and more. Two people I know that had it, one has a bad heart and the other suffers with asthma, were both OK. Regarding the cramps, I had a discectomy and have sciatica, the same thing happened to me and I put it down to being stuck on my back in the same position for a long time. I don't know what **** the Surgeon got out of your knee, unless it was a lot of debris. My only tip is to do what you are told, especially regarding the exercises and physio. I believe what you do in the early days/weeks greatly affects the success of the OP and your return to full mobility. You are doing well so far. Zapp
I have bad circulation in both my legs which means that complete leg crampage is a nightly occurrence, so I can sympathise with you on that. The bit where you know it is coming is horrible, and then the pain
