28g Shot Size 7.5 for Pigeon - Your View

  1. 1. In your expirience where do you stand on this shot size for PIGEON DECOYING?

    • I use them as find no difference while decoying
    • I tend not to use them but I am not against anyone using them as I feel they are more than capable cartridges
    • I dont use them as I feel they affect my cartridge-kill ration compared to bigger loads
    • I dont use them and condem people who do use them as they dont have enough knock down power for pigeons

Worth viewing George Digweeds advice on Pigeon Cartridges here

Sure folk run off and do there own thing and it's about choices. For me if there is 32g or 30g of 6's or 6.5's in the chambers I can't be that far off the right load. I have used trap shells on pigeon and they work but not as well as the aforementioned. The pigeon cartridges loaded by Hull, Gamebore, Eley for example are fit for purpose, thoroughly researched and perfect for the job. Why use a cartridge designed for something else?

George uses 34g 5's for longer targets and kills them consistently. He is an exceptional shot, how many mortals in that bracket?

what would be better 32g #7s or 28g of #5s ?

the answer is, it doesnt matter as long as it does the job. som guys can decoy the birds onto the barrel of the gun, some can just get them near the pattern.

horses for corses.

but out of the 2 shells the 5s would be it for me.

28g #5 would have gaps big enough for me to walk through. We should do everything we can to ensure a clean kill, heavier loads with #6 or #6.5 is the ideal balance between pattern and pellett energy

Can't comment on 7.5's? You just did!

Well, considering it's a fact that no.6 is superior, i think we shooters should all use 42 gm 4 shot out of respect for the woodpigeon!

The point I was making is using the basic law of physics tells you the 7.5 is inferior.

You wouldn't shoot a dear with the wrong caliber bullet so why a pigeon! On the same token there is a limit you would go to not wanting to blow the **** out of it. No one said you should use 42g of 4's.

Truth is I don't understand why the laws don't give guidelines to acceptable weight and size for a humane kill.

And there's no need to get uppety mate, it's called a debate.....

there is another choke other than full?

wow, you learn something from this forum all the time.

choking right should get more than 5 pellets on target at range, in the 30yards, even more.

Yep, to be "reasonably" sure of a clean kill, 5 pellets are required and in the central 20" area of the 30" circle this is delivered at 30 yards by 1/4 choke for 1oz of No 5s. The overall pattern density to achieve this is 75%. Therefore, it will be realised that even with Full, this cartridge choice breaks down at about 38 yards.

Consequently, I'm with topshot and his 6.5s.

i`ll just have to live with the 38 yards.

And why not; after all we're decoying? My trouble is is that I know I'd be tempted to have a go so prefer to pick a cartridge whereby pattern and energy fail together.

Now, when it comes to pheasant, with your combination which you're well used to shooting with, it's fill your boots time!

My experience, esp with fibre, is that a reliable pattern breaks down well before that.

I don't even like using 32/5 on a light choked gun for long range stuff myself for the same reason, you soon get fist sized holes.

Plastic wads seem to increase the range somewhat from my experience.

Each to their own, as said

I tend to use 7.5 28g black gold now for decoying and I love them! Anything within 35 yards is stone dead when I actually hit the bloody things! But I also carry 30g 6's and 32g 6's just incase they are not decoying well and all shots are over 35 yards. But I do shoot with full choke in the semi and 3/4 and full in the o/u
