Case cleaning

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I'm getting a bit jealous of the posh brass my shooting buddies seem to be using so want to start cleaning mine. I'm sure it's just a bling thing and isn't that important but hey, I'm keen to give it a go. So the question is which method is best/easiest?

Ultrasonic seems to work, but I want to do a decent sized batch rather than mess about with 20 at a time. I've also heard somewhere that tumbling or ultrasonic can work harden brass because of the vibration? Is that right?

So, which one should I try? :hmm:

Dont laugh, but last week as an experiment i stuck 20x 303 cases inside a hiking sock then put the whole lot in the washing machine with the rest of my clothes. After 1.5hrs on a 40 degree wash they came out pristine!

I'm still chuckling to myself as I reply to this but I'm going to try it!

Primers out, ultrasonic clean with birchwood casey case cleaner, rinse in hot water, leave to dry, I just put them in an old plastic ammo holder ( the ones you get with bought ammo)upside down for a few days,if you need em quick then stick em in the oven. I use my BC cleaner three times before slinging. If you have a small domestic ultrasonic cleaner don't over load it, the cases will not be clean and the unit may burn out. I do 20 at a time, they only take 4 minutes and then you can do the next batch.

I have the Aldi one and it's small for the amount I shoot, the 1st Ebay link doesn't work for me and the 2nd ones cleaner is also small.

Best value I can find for a decent size (2L+) is this one, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/220810001775?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.co.uk%3A80%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp5197.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D220810001775%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1

Was £59.95 but has gone up £5 :(

I usually de-prime and full length resize, then wash in citric acid, rinse, then Birchwood Casey, then a short baking soda wash to neutralise. Then 15mins in a warm oven to dry and an hour in the case tumbler = spotless :)

warning make shure you use a good sock not a old worn out one that will wear thrue and rattle its nuts off for 30 mins with 110 cases ina brand new washer whilst 6 polish guys are trying to desprately turn the ******* thing off with potcheen induced hangovers. later to be called up by you boss and have to exsplain as to why you thort it would be a good idear to clean brass in the works washer

I did have a crafty snigger!

I used a brand new really thick hiking sock, double knotted the end then stuck the whole lot in a pocket of my cargo trousers which i was washing to make sure.I was a bit worried that i'd smash the glass door to pieces, but they remained in the sock and came out actually better than new. :P
