Slightly off topic but how much would offering free gym memberships to all at local sports centres cost? Would that encourage people to be healthier? I'd rather the money been spent on projects like this and the whole costs for the olympics raised privately then they could charge what they want for it.

There are adverts out at the moment with companies running competitions to be torch carriers - what happened to coming from local communities and being nominated by locals? Thats soon forgotten once coca cola and the banks want their chunk of the publicity all of it dressed up as being for the public benefit when its really a beano for the wealthy elite in the SE.

Anyone want to bet the usual z list "celebs" will be able to get tickets for the opening/closing ceremony? 100m final? any other event they want?

60 Million free gym memberships? Really?

The whole olympics has not been funded by central government, one group that have paid are Londoners along with The National Lottery and The London Organising Committee.

This amounts to over £4bn in private revenue, not not mention the rest.

Perhaps I am a bit of a cynic about the ticket allocation but although it is supposed to be a non-biased application procedure I still recon its a bit of a set-up. If you were allocating the tickets, who would you give them to? Would it be the local family that might go to a local venue on either the bus, train or walk. Or would it be to someone from a distance away that would spend a ton of cash on travel, meals and accommodation. Or even better someone from a different country so that they would bring a load of foreign currency into Britain?

I kind of got the impression that some of the leading lights in all of this must (A) be getting a big handshake out of it and (B) looked like they were getting off on being IMPORTANT.

As for being a miserable ***, Im not sure. I expect that Ill end up watching a bit on TV but although I was a bit of a sportsman back when, I havent ever really had a desire to watch athletics or other people doing things. If the final of the 100 metres was up the road on the village green I dont think Id bother to go and watch it even if it was free.

It just doesnt fire me up and I think that the Olympic ideals have been bent and distorted by commercialism and political considerations.

I have actually been to the original Olympic games site and run along the track at Olympia in Greece. Historic and impressive.

hmm, Taxing Londoners and the National Lottery is "private funding" is it?

Ok 60 million memberships may seem a lot, (would actually run to approx £150 each, assuming 100% uptake - not massively impossible with existing infastructure) but the analogy was intended to show that ******* £9bn on the olympics can't be dressed up as aiming to "improve the countrys health"

however you dress it up, its a load of ****. Its was desigined for the corporate whores to rub shoulders and network. it was not designed for 'the people' and the competitors are just pointless pawns. lets see if Lybia get to send their finest. i doubt it. the whole thing is a government excerise in covert hob ***'ing. how can it be said they need to re-coup some of the spending buy charging us for tickets?? I ****IN paid for the thing to be built.

the government weren't even in power when we won it MM

the simple fact so many people didn't get tickets shows how many people actually applied for tickets. That sort of suggests people do like the idea of it and are going to enjoy it, one things for sure they certainly haven't all been sold to johnny foreigner

and how many people were kept in jobs by the building work, how many companies will be paying tax on the profits made by building it all. Then you have the tourism aspect and the fact most hotels and anywhere else people can stay round London will be rammed and you begin to see the money coming back. Then you have some facilities that will remain afterwards in an area that was a complete **** hole beforehand. Have to say didn't get tickets but was only going to be taken to the Cross country to watch the future evostick candidates jumping so not missing too much.

As for free tickets surely its better they cover some of the costs through ticket sales.

The only problem is what you forgot to add was that most of the workers are probably Polish or other foreigners paying little or no British tax.

what, so you really believe this government has no links to the previous one? also, we didnt 'win' the bid, we were 'awarded' it. what does that tell you?

Er even they dont pay UK income tax and NI (you would need to check with a construction industry employment expert) they pay duty and Vat on Fuel, Booze, Fags, Food, Rent etc etc etc etc etc

Of course there was an issue with Wembley Stadium where some illegal immigrants were nicked working on the site.

Neither of which are central government funding and therefore major funding didn't come from the Taxpayer or the North.

I never suggested that funding from any source for the Olympics is aimed at improving the nations health, simply that some people may get into the swing of the event and it may motivate them. However, I did enjoy your analogy.

I’ve yet to find anyone, apart from those on here that have a few tickets, that have any or even know anyone else that has been allocated tickets.

What this must indicate is that either there is a ticket black hole around here or a very high percentage have gone overseas. I would have thought that with the financial constraints on incomes in this country that a lot of people would have been put off by the high price. I saw a thing on TV whereby a couple + 2 children wanted to go to see a bike riding event and with the train fare, tickets, accommodation and treats was going to knock a hole in a thousand pounds.
