Bigamos
Ok, so out for a few hours on Saturday, and 80% of the pigeons where landing outside the pattern....! Anyone any ideas, or tips to stop this....!
Beardo
how close were the floaters? how far was the top edge of the pattern from your hide? (which i presume was on a hedge line)
Beardo
at a guess the pattern was too close to the hedgeline. where was wind direction?
proTOM1
How far was outside leg from the hide ? For me i would bring the outside leg to in front of the hide ,when the wind is coming from the right or left i use a J shape with the leg infront of me seems to bring the birds well most of the time
Bigamos
The hedge line was behind the hide, and the far line of decoys where about 35 yards out....!
Bigamos
Should I have had it more like this....!
Beardo
indeed that should have been better - where was the wind coming from?
JR1960
Initially i think i'd have tried losing the floaters before touching the pattern. Then opening an 'escape' gap between the blocking line and the hedge, just to give them a bit more confidence and if all else failed possibly put the deeks another 5 yards further out. I assume the wind was right to left?

corvid wings
you should have moved all you deeks up to the right ,as the birds passed the hide to land at the back of the pattern, they should have been spot on for you to shoot ,floaters, magnet, decoys are only to bring the birds within range of the gun,its not a problem if they dont land in the pattern,as long as you can hit them,i suspect they saw the escape route as being over the hide ,leave a big big gap at the front of the deeks to draw them in ,,,,,,,,,,,,,anyway it might work today but tomorrow is a different story. corvid wings
mmmmmm just spotted were the birds were landing sorry , in that case asuming the wind was right to left,i think you should have moved the deeks away into two parallel ish lines,up to the right ,and maybe moved the floaters to the front , Edited August 8, 2011 by corvid wings
fenboy
Also if you are close to a hedge it can sometimes pay to put the decoys much further out so the birds land on the inside of them. strange but true
Ratsmasher
on some days I find a small group of a dozen or so with a rotary in the middle in no particular pattern maybe twenty yards out from the hide
chrispti
Should I have had it more like this....! That or 2 separate groups, a gap between them about 5yrds
magman
The hedge line was behind the hide, and the far line of decoys where about 35 yards out....! There's your problem 20 to 25 yrds max
motty
There's your problem 20 to 25 yrds max I agree. If birds are landing on the other side of your decoys, bring them in a bit. Then if they land on the other side of them, they should still be in range.
fenboy
I think all the different answers to this thread show that there are no right or wrong answers !! Pigeons are pigeons and they do as they please much of the time ,we all have those frustrating days when they wont do as we want, the key then is to keep experimenting until you get it right
Cosd
I can't see a mention of the direction of the wind, but if your pattern is facing the correct way I'm guessing the wind was almost blowing toward the hide. If this is the case then I would have moved the pattern further away from the hide giving the birds more space to swing in from behind the pattern. tignme
Why not shoot the birds at 35 yds, shotgun is capable of killing a lot futher out, assuming you are .I was in similar situation on tues and shot 40 birds in two hours,32 gram no 4s in steel 3/8 n 1/2 chokes.
