MG6065
Hi I've just sent off my SGC , when ( if ) it gets granted I'll be looking for a 12 bore , I'll want to use it as an all round farm gun that I can use for pigeon decoying , rabbit shooting , ferreting and I'll need it to be able to handle fox loads as there are plenty need taking care of , I'll have about £250 to spend , what would you advise ? I've read alot of threads on here and I understand that baikal would be a safe bet for a farm gun? What would you guys advise ? Make , size barrels , barrel type etc. Cheers guys
Simon123
Worth for you to consider on getting a second hand Hatsan Escort. Easier on the shoulder than any O/U Personally i'd go for a 28" barrel version, but everyone and their own preferences
njc110381
In an ideal world a gun with 3" chambers would help as you could use heavier cartridges for the Foxes. Baikal are good, or at least at that end of the market they are good. I'm selling mine for inside your budget if you want it? O/U, Multichoke, 3" chambers, ejector and single trigger. It's the top of the range in the Baikal world!
Tam
Baikal or Lanber
welshwarrior
A beretta semi 303 etc the early one may be a good bet Or a lanber o/u would be my choice at that price
Harnser
I would advise you to go for a double side by side or an over and under . There are plenty available in your price range . I would stay clear of a self loader until you have a bit of experience under your belt .A self loader will proberbly make you cry and a hatson will proberbly drive you to distraction . Harnser . Tam
In fact if you are after a SxS theres a Gunmark Kestrel in sales - would be best in 3" chambers
MG6065
Cheers fellas, most of my shooting has been with a squires bingham pump action and I've used the escort semi auto a couple mates have one , I like the semi auto and pump but would much prefer a double barrel if I'm Honest I like the safety aspect of having the barrels broken etc , can never be too safe especially with all that's going on on a 1400 acre farm ! COACH
Laurona 3" chambers, rust proof O/U. Perfect all weather farm gun and cheap. OR Baikal 627.
TJ91
lanber, baikal or laurona (in that order) good guns for not alot of money dont worry if they arent 3inch chamberd- plenty of 2 3/4 inch cartridges out there which will bowl a fox over dead at 35-40yards best bet is to go have a few shots with as many guns as possible and get the gun that fits best if it doesnt fit you will never be happy and it wont matter what cartridge you use 'coz you wont hit much! kent
I know a few Baikal owners on the farms, the perfect gun in a multi choke 3" if it fits you good. I like semi auto myself but it would be my last choice for driving round in the cab or leaving nearby unloaded when repairing fences etc. i would want to use a break open gun everytime for that. A 2 3/4" gun will kill foxes but a 3" gives a wider selection of shells as you can always use a 2 3/4" shell in a 3" gun but not the other way around. I know my neighbour has an old 2 1/2" and he is seriously struggling to get foxing loads for it now in time i am sure this will happen with 2 3/4" maybee a while off but Farm guns tend to hang about through generations
