-Mongrel-
...or three I am looking at buying a semi-auto for wildfowling and after some fowlers advice and a bit of reading I'm down to the following, I appreciate that they'll need to fit but assuming good fit on the guns then what would be your choice and why please. Benelli Super Black Eagle Semi-Auto, second hand, £699 (Barrel: 28", Stock: 14 3/8", Choke: Multi, Chamber: 3"1/2) Winchester Super X3 Black Shadow (3.5in - Game - Multi Choke) Semi-Auto new Shotgun. £710 Beretta Urika 1, Semi-Auto second hand, £699 (Barrel: 28", Stock: 14 1/2", Choke: Multi, Chamber: 3") Edited September 18, 2011 by -Mongrel-
poontang
I'd forget the Beretta as it has a 3" chamber and go for either the Benelli or Winchester, unless you're happy using tungsten/hevishot for geese (cost prohibitive). The SBE is a proven performer, but secondhand. The SX3's get great reviews and AFAIK are built on similar lines to the Browning Maxus. Either will do the job well, but personally I'd go for the SX3. ME
Had a Beretta Urika 1, tried everything, but it jammed like mutha and drove me insane. All guns are different, but I wouldnt buy another Urika.
Tam
Beretta Xtrema - there is no option
ME
Beretta Xtrema - there is no option I had a brand new one of them, the barrel rusted within months (Friday afternoon gun). I couldnt get a replacement barrel from GMK so got a refund, shame really, great gun. Never jammed unlike it's little brother.
mickmep
i'd go for the benelli, as long as it appears in good condition. if/when you decide to sell the benelli will be easier to sell and has already lost its money from buying new. personally would pick inertia over gas any day, although i have a sx3 and never had any problems with it. handle both though, they are completely different feeling guns. as the benelli is secondhand and assuming its at a dealer i'd try and have a borrow and shoot a round of clays which may give you an idea if its for you or not. Tam
Had one since 2007ish never missed a beat, clean it now & again
chrispti
Which ever feels right for you, you wont go wrong with any of the 3 Me personally, Beretta I dont like the SBE, for me, too light, horrible stepped rib and kick like mules
utectok
Second hand best value get the SBE I've had one and there indestructible plus if you wanna change you'll always get £500 for it !!
poontang
I dont like the SBE, for me, too light, horrible stepped rib and kick like mules I've only used one once, but would agree 100% with that
EdSolomons
I can't stand benellis, as said above excessive recoil and far too light. I've had a 390 for years, never cleaned it (except a blast of wd40 when action rusted up) and it keeps on going. Shot one of the new a400 jobs a mate got and wouldn't use it for a fencepost! Urika all the way.
goldeneye243
I have got a camo SX3 - I'm just back from using mine on some pigeons and I love it! Most people that have picked it up have liked it. If not the SX3, I would then probably go for the SBE but I have not shot one myself. shotgun sam
Get a Baikal MP153 just type that name into a search engine and look for the video of the person showing how much dirt, water a Baikal can take and still work try that with a more expensive gun and they will not work which makes a baikal suitable for wildfowling. Sam Hmmmm, I'm guessing this is the video you've seen? Most people mention this when talking about the MP153. Not the best advert though, if you check out the jams @2m.18s and 4m.15s. shotgun sam
Poontang, Yes that is the video and there are jams in the video but like I said try that with a berreta or the likes and it would just not work. The baikal functions well considering what He does to it so if you want something that takes abuse when wildfowling and is still capable of being fired look no further. I would rather have a gun that can take some punishment and work than a gun that fails and ruins your whole day. Sam

Sam Well I wouldn't know about that because I've never seen anyone try it with a Beretta or the like. My point is the Baikal in the video jams on more than one occasion, and that would definitely ruin my day. It's all pretty irrelevant anyway seeing as the OP has a choice of Beretta, Benelli or Winchester.
-Mongrel-
hatsan Not getting a Hatsan mate, I know some people love them and have had no trouble with theirs, but I know of plenty other people who wouldn't touch them with a 15' barge pole. Sorry.
billytheghillie
shame to throw away good money on other brands, which will also let you down given time.

-Mongrel-
shame to throw away good money on other brands, which will also let you down given time. Any gun will wear at some point, but, it does seem to be more a problem with Hatsan's quality control. If you get a good one then I'm sure it will last ok, but if you don't then it's problems sooner rather than later I gather. Anyway, it's immaterial to me, if there's a question mark over the reliability then it's a no goer as far as I'm concerned.
Simon123
Personally i'd go for the Winchester SX3. I'd love to be able to afford one but it's not to be :/ They are not at all cartridge fussy what so ever which will become in handy if you plan on going to a clay ground and they handle fantastically. If all three fit, would definitely go for the Winchester ;)
stoggieman
Hi all I have owned a winchester xtr 1500 for a good few years. It was my wildfowl and pigeon gun. It has never let me down though it works best on a mid to heavy load. If I was in the market for a wildfowl only gun I would look very closely at the Benelli super nova I know it is a pump but it is an ideal gun for the marsh and flight pond It is designed to use steel shot almost rust proof and very adaptable they are also reasonably priced. Evil Elvis
Ive always preferred browning semi's and as the sx3 has a browning action Id chose that, cant stand the "ting" you get from berretta s/a's
