super sharp shooter
Depends on how much you have to spend
Oops Missed Again
Go for the semi auto. It will do what a OU and SxS will do, plus more. Light on recoil, single sight plane, very reliable (if they go wrong, normally operator error!!) Once you've used one it's difficult to go back to an old fashioned design like an OU or SxS
M.I.A
What ever fits & feels best. You will get so many different answers, but its your money you are spending and you who will have to live with the choice.

magman
Auto's spit shells every where Ou or sxs would be my choice unless its a Remmi 1100
Scully
If it's for decoying, then an auto would be ideal, unless your hide is big enough to accomodate the opening and closing of your barrels(as with an o/u or sxs).Saying that, the o/u multi-choke has to be the most versatile I would say. pigeon street
I've got side by side and an under and over. shoot well with both
pg123
If its for mainly pigeons how about starting off with a cheapie side by side. Plenty around for £100. When you have been shooting for a while you will have a better idea of what really suits you. Buying guns can be addictive. Very few people stick with only 1 gun and you can save a few quid for the next purchase. The old side by side will still be in the cabinet ready for that rough day on the farm when its pouring with rain!
Albert 888
I have a auto12b,o/u12b and a sxs20b.And use all 3 a seperate times.I prefer my auto but cant use it all the time due to phesant shoot. Dont use my o/u on the marsh because i like it too much and dont want it going rusty. And use sxs 20b on the phesant when beating/walking gun.Best thing to do is try all 3 if possible find out which one you like and get on best with. I would use my auto all the time if i could.Berreta make a auto that breaks like an o/u and spits spent shells at your feet i thougt about one but have seen some bad reviews.Good look in finding the right gun. HDAV
Best first gun IMO is an OU easy to use and maintain, make sure it fits and take your time choosing.
ChrisAsh
Are or will you be interested in clays or shooting when out of season, in which case the side x side would probably not be the best choice though was always used in the past
