As the title says WHERE DO YOU DRAW THE LINE when it comes to the entry costs for shoots?

Six of us were going to shoot an open shoot at windrush shooting ground on saturday but four have just dropped out due to the £37.00 entry fee, havn't spoke to the other lad yet but can't see him going now either, probabley go to ian cooleys instead which is a pity as i,ve never shot windrush,i realise there's prize money to pay out but costs just seem to be spirraling out of controll

More and more shooters are cutting back on their shooting because of the cost of everything rising, not just shooting, but general household bills as well.

I have had to cut my clay shooting trips in half and now only got to Orston and one straw baler.

As you say a big part of if is prizemoney- I believe £200 hg and £150 to class winners plus down the places.... Has to come from somewhere.

What is the birds only option?

As far as i'm aware there is not a birds only option, £37 entry then £30 if you re-enter, £100 first in class £ 60 for 2nd high gun £200,does seem a bit on the expensive side if you've got no chance of winning anything!

Cut out the sky tv and the unnecessary food and snacks that you can get from home for half the price. Stop the pub and buy supermarket beer. Stop fags and unecessary car journeys, shop around for insurance and fix the car yourself if you can. I try and do all this then it doesnt matter about the cost of the things you want to do like clay shooting. Also, Sun holidays can save you a bomb!

I find the whole £30+ quid entry quite bizarre, it has it`s roots back when things took off economically from around 1996 onwards when trade was good all round. It seemed like they just stuck another £2 every other week because they knew they could and people could pay it. Now they`ve got so used to it they can`t seem to grasp the reality of the times.

I can tolerate £35 for registered shoots with a decent pay back but a lot of the normal 100 bird opens cost that kind of money with £80 HG and average targets which I think is naughty but owing to lack of enough grounds and hence competition, we have no real choice, short and curlies.

Personally the distance to shoots has as much impact on where I go as anything else. The clever grounds put on good targets, give healthy prizes and keep costs down to encourage people to travel. Maybe we ought to start a thread and rate grounds on a weekly basis to keep them on their toes?

I stopped clay shooting completely when we bought our house. I couldn't stand paying out that sort of money to shoot something that didn't matter once I'd lost my disposable income.

It does seem expensive but then shooting isn't that cheap a sport unless you shoot live quarry and sell it. If money matters that much you have to look at the way you do things as I did.

I'm with Hamster regarding travelling costs and think it's a great idea to do a week-by-week report from members on where they found good shooting at a reasnable price. More and more small shoots are going to the wall because they can't offer prize money but their big advantage is that they don't get descended on my pot hunters who enter once, clean up, then head on for the next small shoot :hmm:

Shooting for pleasure should always cost less than shooting for prizes and I'm one of the majority who knows that part of my entry fee is going to end up in the pocket of someone who rocked up for 1/2 an hour, straighted the layout and went on to blitz the next shoot on their list knowing they'd have a cheque in the post.

We're lucky in Norfolk as 'hitclays' who runs Fair Clay Targets puts on regular (twice monthly) Sunday shoots of 100 birds on 10 stands plus as many as you want to shoot once you've done your card for £22 all in including sarnies at the local pub afterwards. It's a formula that works well and we all know that we're not paying into a prize pot for someone we've never met before (but maybe seen in Pull! or Sporting Gun) to casually win.

'hitclays' is also running flushes for PW members at £20 for, probably, 250 shots - some people shot more and some a few less. Last flush he ran he even donated £100 to 'oddjob' to help with his work introducing youngsters to the sport :good: Check out the Norfolk Flush thread on here...

Keep an eye on PW - the next flush will be 11th December and it's bound to be a good day - shooting for the fun of it, as it should be. We're expecting lads and lasses from Herts, Essex, Suffolk and (obviously) Norfolk but any PW member can be assured of a warm welcome and a VERY warm pair of barrels  Everyone is very relaxed and friendly and it's what our sport SHOULD be about :P

Let's kep shooting affordable and fun eh?

I shoot most weeks at my club I think memberships is £35 or £50 a year then the more you shoot the cheaper it gets £13.50 for 3 rounds of skeet of compact sporting £17 for 4. We shoot every Wednesday and every other Saturday, free tea coffee and biscuits too.
