Dr_Scholl
He was about a 125 pound spike buck and I shot him from about 10 yards. Couldn't have had a better shot. Donated most of the meat except for the back straps to Hunters for the Hungry.
Wharf Rat
Nice one. Damn good stalk to get to 10 yards. Cannot use bows for game in the UK; what spec do you use?
Dr_Scholl
Nice one. Damn good stalk to get to 10 yards. Cannot use bows for game in the UK; what spec do you use? The bow was a Bear Odyssey II. 27 inch draw length (a little short for me, but not too bad) , 45 pound draw weight. I didn't stalk it, I shot it from a tree stand. Unfortunately, it was a gut shot. But it went down after running only 30 yards so I didn't have to track it.
Wharf Rat
I used to be pretty good with a bow as a youngster. My 35lb recurve was a cheap way into learning a lot of hunting skills. With no sights you have to really feel what you are doing, hunting at it's best. Friend of mine is into target archery, but I get lost with all the new fangled sights, releases etc. Keep meaning to get a decent crossbow but it's down the list from .177 target rifle, 25" English sbs... Congratulations on what I hope is the first of many!

With your population density and all, hunting with a bow makes more sense.

I'm up for shooting most things but you have to have respect for your quary and it needs to be as clean a kill as possible!! Royal

Royal Right and i'm sure you've never pulled a shot when your adrenaline was pumping. Bow hunting is a lot different than hunting with a rifle or shotgun. Besides, it ran 30 yards, fell down and was dead within 2 minutes of the shot. It doesn't get much better than that.
Sprackles
Wish you could use a bow or crossbow legally here, method used for centuries but now lost as yet another chip is broken away from the hunting scene by the antis and hug a bunny brigade. Also since they are unlicensed, you wouldn't have to jump through the hoops the police insist on to get your FAC.........but then again, perhaps that was part of the overall plan anyway. I think we may have to agree to disagree on this one mate! And yes in my younger days I did mess the odd shot up when i thought i could shoot deer at a distance which were bigger than my skill set! But at10 yards I'd have probably turned the rifle around and hit it on the head with the butt!! Lol I don't think a gut shout from 10 yards is something to boast about! Sorry just my opinion. Hamster
I have never had the chance to hunt with a bow but I'm willing to bet you would get the proper shakes at such close range , perhaps easier when the range is more like 30 or so? phaedra1106
Reading this prompted me to get my compound bow out of the cupboard, it's a dual cam PSE with a 31" draw (I'm 6' 6") and a 70lb draw weight. Not used it in almost 4 years since a nice woman decided not to give way at a roundabout and almost took the passenger side of my car clean off!. Ended up with the usual whiplash and a bonus of permanent shoulder damage but as it's not been too bad today I thought I'd try to see if I could still draw the bow ............ not one of my better ideas :( Now sitting with an ice pack on it, 2 Tramadol, 2 Ibuprofen and feeling remarkably stupid Edited October 17, 2011 by phaedra1106

vole
If bow hunting was good enough for our ancestors then it should be good enough for us , except they bloody banned it ! I think the U.S should protect their heritage and if that includes bow hunting then all the better . Good shooting Edited October 17, 2011 by vole

Ian Ian I did say it was only my opinion and to be fair it doesn't really matter what he had been shooting with wether it was a bow, .50 cal or pea shooter! The fact is I wouldn't boast about a gut shot from 10 yards away no matter what I was shooting with! If we were all hunting the same as the yanks we would just drop an enormous bomb on everything!!! Harnser
The modern day compound bow and broad head arrows are no match for the centre fire rifle or shot gun for shooting deer . But before anybody condemns the bow for hunting deer you need to see it done by a good bow hunter . I have been on several bow hunts in the USA with my cousins who are avid bow hunters and very good shots . Most deer shot with a bow are taken from a high seat at relatively close range 10 to 60 yards . The modern day compound bow and broad head hunting arrows are a devastating weapon against all soft skin animals from rabbits up to black bears and will kill them all humanely . I never actually used the bow myself (as I dont have the necessary skills)But have seen several deer shot with the bow . Every deer I saw shot with the bow ran on for distances from between 20 and 200 yards . A deer shot with broad head arrows bleed out very quickly and will die after a very short time . The bow is not my choice of weapon for shooting deer as it doesn't have the knock down power of the rifle or shotgun or even the handgun (which I have used on deer) but I can assure you all that the bow in the right hands is an awesome and very skillful way of shooting deer . Believe me the right bow with the right arrows are as deadly and humane as any centre fire rifle or shotgun . Harnser

Lol Like I said mate only my opinion! Royal Fair play to the guy for admitting the gut shot- i have seen as bad and worse here. Bow hunting being banned was more about having something else to throw at poachers in the way of charges. Is it as humane as a rifle shot to the vitals? Not realy IMO but a lot safer in many locations and takes a heck of a lot more skill than shooting them with a rifle at longer ranges_ there aint many so called stalkers here who can get within 10yds of a truely wild deer OR would even try

Sprackles
A good crossbow would be my choice for hunting. There are some awesome and accurate examples out there and coupled with a good broadhead would make a potent combination. Having played around for a while with crossbows, accuracy is good and after seeing my bolts penetrate fully a bag of sand I would be confident of using it as an effective hunting tool. Ah well, time to stop dreaming.

I probably should've clarified earlier, but it wasn't a true gut shot. The arrow hit the actual stomach and part of the liver, the latter was probably why it bled out as fast as it did and I missed the intestines entirely. Nothing was putrid when we gutted it. I was surprised how clean it was.
Albertan_J
As a kid we took outdoor education and bow hunting was part of it. Very skillful and I dare say a lot less wounding as there isn't any need to be taking ridiculous shots as we often hear about with rifles. Good for you for telling it how it was gut shot and all !
